Thomas Markle Sr, 82, the estranged father of Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, was arrested on Friday at a senior care facility in Florida. A court video published by The Daily Mail showed Markle in a wheelchair and wearing handcuffs. Markle was moved by ambulance with federal agents present, the video showed. Phone and email messages to Markle’s court-appointed attorney were not immediately returned, authorities said.
Thomas Markle Sr arrest linked to child sexual abuse material storage units
First Assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli said the case followed the seizure of about 78 items. The items included slides, film negatives, and books with suspected child sexual abuse images. Investigators recovered the material from storage in the Los Angeles area, Essayli said.
An FBI affidavit filed in court said some images appeared to depict Markle with children. Essayli said, "These allegations are extremely serious, and we will prosecute Mr Markle to the fullest extent of federal law,\". Essayli told The Associated Press there was no evidence of victims in the US so far. The investigation remained active.
US Magistrate Judge Lindsay Griffin released Markle back to a senior care centre. The judge required electronic monitoring as a condition of release. Griffin also ordered a psychiatric exam for Markle. Griffin said Markle might not understand the process or assist a lawyer properly.
The US Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles said court hearings would later shift to California. Officials said that change likely would not happen for at least several weeks. Authorities also said Markle has rented two Los Angeles-area storage units since 2008. Investigators linked those units to the seized material.
Thomas Markle Sr case followed The Sun reports and FBI inquiry
Authorities said the investigation began after reports by The Sun, a British tabloid. The report said Meghan’s half brother found child sexual abuse images while clearing their father’s home. The Sun said the home was in Cebu City in the Philippines. That discovery led to information about US storage units, officials said.
The Sun reported that Thomas Markle Jr found hundreds, if not thousands of images in boxes. The report said Thomas Markle Jr informed police in the Philippines and contacted the FBI. Thomas Markle Jr told The Sun, \"I have supported, cared for him and helped him for years - but that stops now,\". Thomas Markle Jr added, \"I wont speak to my father ever again unless Im called to give evidence against him.\"
Authorities said Markle was living in the Philippines earlier in the year. Officials said Markle suffered a stroke and had a left leg amputation. The health issues led to a return to the United States, according to the account given. Investigators later connected the overseas reports to the US inquiry.
Meghan response to Thomas Markle Sr allegations and royal family context
Meghan, an American citizen who starred in the US drama Suits, married Prince Harry in 2018. The wedding took place at Windsor Castle, and the couple have two children. Their children are Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Meghan said the allegations about images caused deep distress.
Meghan said a letter was sent to police in London in 2019. Meghan said, \"It made troubling and disturbing allegations against my father and I was given assurances that these were being investigated,\". Meghan also said, \"I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children was for one reason: to protect them.\"
There was no immediate comment on Friday from Meghan’s representative. Buckingham Palace was not expected to comment on the arrest. Officials noted Harry is the second son of King Charles III. Meghan and Harry are not working members of the royal family.
The couple left royal duties after moving to California in 2020. After returning to the UK in August, Charles issued a statement. The statement said their status had not changed. Officials also noted Thomas Markle Sr has never built ties with Meghan’s in-laws.
Thomas Markle Sr is a retired television lighting and photography director. Markle did not attend the 2018 wedding after a scandal over staged photographs. Reports said a British tabloid published the staged pictures. The estrangement continued in the years since, alongside the latest criminal case and court proceedings.
