Tim Cook's 15-Year Apple Legacy: From $350 Billion To Nearly $5 Trillion; 5 Big Transformations

Tim Cook's run as Apple's CEO came to an end on September 1st, after 15 years at the company. After stepping down from CEO role he has now moved into the role of executive chairman of Apple's board.

Taking over as the next CEO is John Ternus, Apple's 51-year-old senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, who has spent nearly his entire career at the company since joining in 2001.

Tim Cook Career In Apple

Cook stepped into the top job in August 2011, succeeding Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who resigned due to deteriorating health. At the time, Cook was seen chiefly as an operations and supply-chain specialist rather than a product visionary, and there were doubts about whether he could keep Apple's innovation engine running. Fifteen years on, the numbers answer that question emphatically, even as fresh questions now surround Apple's AI strategy under Ternus. Here are five big things that changed at Apple during Cook's tenure.

Apple's Market Value Exploded From $350 Billion To Nearly $5 Trillion

Apple was valued at roughly $350 billion. Under his leadership, that valuation climbed past $1 trillion in August 2018, $2 trillion in August 2020, and $3 trillion in January 2022, before crossing $4 trillion in October 2025 and briefly touching $5 trillion in July 2026. Apple's stock delivered a return of more than 2,000% over the period, and the company became the first in history to hit several of these valuation milestones.

Services Became A Trillion-Rupee-Scale Business In Its Own Right

Perhaps Cook's most consequential strategic shift was turning Apple from a hardware-first company into one with a massive, high-margin services arm. In 2011, services made up only a small slice of Apple's revenue. Under Cook, Apple built out Apple Music, Apple TV+, iCloud+, Apple Pay, Apple Fitness+ and Apple Arcade, among others.

The Product Line-Up Expanded Well Beyond The iPhone

Cook oversaw the launch of several new product categories that did not exist when he took over, including the Apple Watch, AirPods, HomePod and, more recently, Vision Pro. The wearables, home and accessories business grew from under $10 billion a year to more than $30 billion.

Revenue And Scale Roughly Quadrupled

Apple's overall business scaled up dramatically on Cook's watch. Annual revenue rose from about $108 billion in fiscal 2011 to a trailing 12-month figure of more than $466 billion. The company's active installed base, which Apple first disclosed in 2016 at a billion devices, has since grown to more than 2.5 billion devices worldwide.
