Kashmir Tourism Leaders Condemn Recent Terror Incidents and Advocate for Peace Initiatives

Tourism stakeholders in Kashmir have expressed their disapproval of recent terror incidents, labelling them unacceptable. They affirmed their commitment to aiding the government in restoring peace. During a joint press conference, industry leaders emphasised their desire for tranquility in the region. "It is not acceptable to Kashmiris," stated Mushtaq Chaya, chairman of the Jammu Kashmir Hoteliers Club.

Chaya highlighted that many people rely on tourism for their livelihood and that such incidents threaten peace and the tourism sector. "We want peace only. We condemn these incidents," he reiterated. A grenade attack near the Tourist Reception Center on Sunday injured 11 people, following a series of attacks targeting non-locals since the new government was formed in Jammu and Kashmir.

Industry's Call for Action

Manzoor Ahmad Wangnoo, another tourism representative, urged the government to identify and address the root causes of these incidents. He pointed out issues like unemployment and drug abuse as areas needing attention. Rauf Tramboo, president of the Travel Agents Association of Kashmir (TAAK), echoed these sentiments, condemning the incidents and pledging full support to government efforts to curb them.

"We are at the beck and call of the government. We assure our full support to the government to curb such incidents," Tramboo stated. He also called on security agencies to become more proactive in addressing these threats.

Concerns Over Political Stability

When questioned about National Conference president Farooq Abdullah's comments regarding potential motives behind these attacks, Chaya suggested investigations should be conducted. "He Farooq Abdullah is our tallest leader. He is right," Chaya said, noting that such attacks had not occurred for several years but have resumed with the new government's formation.

Chaya acknowledged that these attacks have affected tourist arrivals but sought to reassure visitors that Kashmir remains a safe destination. The industry aims to convey that tourists can travel freely within the region at any time.

The tourism sector's unified stance against violence underscores its importance to Kashmir's economy and society. By working with authorities, they hope to restore peace and stability, ensuring a secure environment for both locals and visitors alike.
