Shivraj Singh Chouhan Advocates for Enhanced Training of Agricultural Startups in India

Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan highlighted the need for effective training of agricultural startups in India. He stressed the importance of creating well-researched training modules and curricula. This was stated during the virtual foundation stone laying of the Executive Hostel Block and Training Block at the National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management in Hyderabad.

Chouhan urged the institute to focus on every aspect of extension work. He suggested that training modules should not only follow traditional methods but also address current needs. "The training of agricultural startups is very important today," he said, emphasising the need for modern approaches.

Crop Diversification and Natural Farming

The minister also advocated for crop diversification, value addition, and the promotion of natural farming practices. While in Daltonganj, Jharkhand, he expressed concern about the reduced cultivation of pigeon peas in the state. He announced that the Centre would procure these pulses to support farmers.

A team will be sent to Jharkhand to promote the cultivation of pigeon peas and other pulses. This initiative aims to encourage farmers in the region to diversify their crops and improve agricultural productivity.

Government's Agricultural Priorities

In Delhi, Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi met with World Bank Vice-President for South Asia, Martin Raiser. They discussed government priorities in agriculture, focusing on achieving self-sufficiency in pulses and oilseeds. The government is promoting sustainable agriculture and addressing challenges related to small landholdings.

The meeting also covered improving service delivery to farmers and fostering behavioural change on a large scale. Chaturvedi highlighted efforts to implement policies that enhance these areas, ensuring better outcomes for farmers across India.

Carbon Credits and Sustainable Practices

Discussions included ways to benefit small and marginal farmers through carbon credits. Challenges such as decreasing farm sizes and access to capital for farmer producer organisations were addressed. The use of digital tools and soil health infrastructure was considered crucial for promoting sustainable practices.

Policies are being designed to incentivise farmers to adopt climate-smart agriculture. These initiatives aim to create resilient agricultural systems that can withstand environmental changes while ensuring sustainability.

The government's focus remains on supporting farmers through innovative solutions and policy measures. By addressing key challenges, they aim to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability across India.
