Trump unity call follows suspected attack near White House dinner event in Washington

President Donald Trump adopted a subdued tone after a suspect was arrested near a Washington hotel ahead of his planned address to the White House Correspondents Association dinner. Trump said political violence is rising in the US and abroad and urged unity and bipartisan healing. Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen and continue investigating motive.

President Donald Trump adopted a muted and more conciliatory tone after what Trump described as a third attempt. Trump said personal politics had made Trump a repeated target. Trump also urged unity across party lines amid rising violence. "Its always shocking when something like this happens. Happened to me, a little bit. And that never changes,\" Trump told reporters.

Trump urges unity after incident

Authorities said a man carrying guns and knives tried to breach a security perimeter. The incident took place inside a Washington hotel. Trump was due to speak at the White House Correspondents Association dinner. A suspect was arrested and named as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California. Investigators said they were still establishing what happened and why.

Donald Trump security incident and unity message

Trump said the presidency carried serious personal risk. Trump pointed to a wider rise in political violence in the US. Trump said the same trend was visible globally. \"No country is immune.\" Trump said Trump was the intended target. Trump suggested repeated threats reflected the impact of the presidency. \"Ive studied assassinations, and I must tell you the most impactful people - the people who do the most, take a look at Abraham Lincoln,\" Trump said.

Trump expanded on the point with another line about political attacks. \"The people that make the biggest impact, theyre the ones that they go after. They dont go after the ones that dont do much.\" Trump then appealed for the public to move past divisions. \"We have to, we have to resolve our differences,\" Trump said. Trump described a large crowd as unusually warm and unified.

Trump described the dinner crowd as mixed across political labels. Trump said the room included Republicans, Democrats, and independents. Trump also cited conservatives, liberals, and progressives. Trump said those terms could overlap, but still mattered. Trump said there was \"a tremendous amount of love and coming together.\" Trump said Trump watched the reaction closely and was impressed.

Donald Trump Fox News interview and speech plans

During a Sunday Fox News Channel interview, Trump returned to the same themes. Trump said the dinner showed people could come together. \"I saw some Democrats, as we were leaving - and they were generally hostile - and last night they were waving to me. Politicians, congressmen, senators. They were waving and saying, Great going and Hello,\" Trump said. \"The place was just coming together. It was very nice to see.\"

Trump said the prepared speech would have attacked the media. \"I was gonna really rip it last night,\" Trump said. Trump said the incident led Trump to draft different remarks. \"Itll be a speech of love.\" Trump said the shift did not happen at the event. \"But I didnt get a chance to do that,\" Trump said. \"Probably I was better off, if I didnt. I dont know.\"

Trump also made a harsher remark about the suspect. \"I hated a guy like this - a sick, bad person - I hated somebody like that changing the course of our country.\" Trump later argued the episode supported a new White House ballroom plan. Trump said the need was proven by the Saturday incident. Trump also criticised legal opposition tied to the project.

Donald Trump earlier attempts and political rhetoric

The latest incident echoed earlier moments when Trump urged national unity. In 2024, a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, ended with Trump injured in the ear. A supporter was also killed. Trump then delivered a calmer message at the convention. \"The discord and division in our society must be healed. We must heal it quickly,\" Trump said then. \"As Americans, we are bound together by a single fate and a shared destiny. We rise together. Or we fall apart.\"

That softer approach did not last long, according to the pattern described. Trump later returned to combative messaging in that same 2024 speech. Trump repeated false claims about the 2020 election result. Trump also accused Democratic President Joe Biden of severe national damage. A similar arc followed in September 2024 at West Palm Beach, Florida. Secret Service agents fired at a rifle-armed man near Trump.

Steve Witkoff, who played golf with Trump then, said Trump was courageous and stoic. Soon after, Trump frequently criticised \"radical Democrats\" and \"left-wing lunatics.\" Trump also labelled Ryan Routh a \"sick individual.\" Routh was sentenced to life in prison for trying to kill Trump. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche linked threats to polarising rhetoric. \"There have been threats against leadership for a very long time. Years and years and years. Thats not new,\" Blanche said on ABCs This Week.

Donald Trump, Melania Trump, and King Charles III visit

Blanche said threats aimed at Trump and the Cabinet were distinct. \"There is something unique about the threats against President Trump and his Cabinet that is disgusting.\" Trump said the latest incident was different for another reason. First lady Melania Trump was present. Trump told Sunday interviewers Melania Trump was doing great. Trump earlier said Melania Trump was rattled and alert.

Trump said Melania Trump reacted quickly to the disturbance. \"I think she knew immediately,\" Trump said. Trump added that Melania Trump spoke during the moment. \"She was saying Its a bad noise.\" Trump then described the impact on Melania Trump. \"It was a rather traumatic experience for her.\"

Buckingham Palace said Sunday that King Charles III’s US trip would proceed. The plan followed security discussions between US and British officials. \"Following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic through the day, and acting on advice of government, we can confirm the state visit by their majesties will proceed as planned,?\" the palace said. \"The king and queen are most grateful to all those who have worked at pace to ensure this remains the case and are looking forward to the visit getting underway tomorrow.\"

Charles and Queen Camilla are scheduled to start a four-day trip on Monday. The itinerary includes tea with the president and first lady Melania Trump. Trump told Fox News Channels The Sunday Briefing about the visit. Trump said, \"were going to have a great time\" and added that the King \"represents his nation like nobody else can do it.\"
