Strait of Hormuz to reopen after Iran deal, Trump says ahead of Sunday signing

US President Donald Trump says a peace deal with Iran will be signed on Sunday and the Strait of Hormuz will reopen to all immediately afterwards. He contrasts the agreement with the 2015 JCPOA under President Barack Obama and claims Iran will not obtain a nuclear weapon, adding that remaining nuclear material would be disposed of later.

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that a peace deal with Iran will be signed on Sunday. Donald Trump added that the Strait of Hormuz will reopen to all straight after that. The remarks followed a week of military action and tense talks between the two countries.

Strait of Hormuz to reopen after deal

In a Truth Social post, Donald Trump wrote, "The Deal is scheduled to get signed tomorrow, and immediately after it is signed, the Hormuz Strait is OPEN TO ALL\". Donald Trump presented the plan as a major shift from recent US policy. The message came after days of new attacks and negotiations.

Donald Trump said the agreement differed from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The earlier deal was signed under President Barack Obama’s leadership. Donald Trump wrote, \"My Agreement with Iran is the exact opposite, A WALL TO NO NUCLEAR WEAPON! In fact, they no longer want a Nuclear Weapon, nor will they have one, either through purchase, development, or any other form of procurement,\".

Donald Trump also claimed Iran’s nuclear programme had been effectively neutralised. Donald Trump said remaining nuclear material would be removed later. Donald Trump wrote, \"At the appropriate time, when all is calm, we will go in and get the Nuclear Dust, buried deep under the powerful sunken granite mountains, thanks to our beautiful B-2 Bombers and their brilliant pilots, and downblend and destroy it, whether in Iran, or the United States,\".

Donald Trump warned that further action remained possible if the process failed. Donald Trump wrote, \"We look forward to working with Iran, and the entire Middle East, long into the future. Hopefully, this process will all work out quickly, easily, and smoothly. If it doesnt, we have the ultimate alternative, hopefully never to be used again,\".

Earlier this week, the US carried out two rounds of strikes on Iran. The strikes followed an Apache helicopter being shot down by Iranian drones. On Thursday, Donald Trump threatened to hit Iran \"very hard tonight\". Donald Trump also said the US could take over Kharg Island.

Kharg Island is Iran’s key oil export hub. The planned action was later stopped. Donald Trump called off the strikes within hours at the last minute. On Friday, Donald Trump criticised Iranian interlocutors. Donald Trump accused them of dishonesty after deal terms were leaked to media.

Trump Iran peace deal and ceasefire talks

Donald Trump spoke hours after Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commented on the talks. Shehbaz Sharif said a US-Iran peace deal could be finalised within the next 24 hours. The comment came as the sides appeared closer to agreement than before. The war began on February 28.

The two sides agreed to a ceasefire on April 8. Negotiators have worked since then on a peace agreement. Donald Trump’s Saturday statement linked the expected signing to access through the Strait of Hormuz. The coming days will show whether the planned signing proceeds as stated.
