US President Donald Trump will participate virtually in the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos shortly after his inauguration, according to the forum's president. Borge Brende, who leads the Geneva-based organisation, mentioned that Trump had previously attended the event in person twice during his first term. "On Thursday afternoon, he will join us digitally, online, live in a dialogue with our participants," Brende stated.

Brende expressed optimism about Trump's virtual appearance, highlighting its significance in understanding the new administration's policy priorities. He also noted uncertainty regarding Elon Musk's attendance. Musk is expected to co-lead Trump's new Department of Government Efficiency. However, Brende anticipates "additional, high-level representation" from the administration once the US Senate begins confirming Trump's nominees.
Global Participation and Key Themes
This year's forum will see a record participation of around 900 business leaders, including representatives from emerging markets. Nearly 3,000 participants from over 130 countries are expected to attend. The theme for this edition is "Collaboration for the Intelligent Age," reflecting technology's growing role globally. The forum has faced criticism for being an elite gathering focused on Western and Gulf state interests.
Mirek Dušek, managing director of the forum, countered these criticisms by emphasising increased participation from businesses in developing countries within the "Global South." He stated that their leaders' attendance is now on par with those from developed nations. The event will address various topics such as climate change, artificial intelligence, global trade, economic growth, and conflicts in regions like Ukraine and Sudan.
High-Profile Attendees and Geopolitical Context
Ursula Von Der Leyen, president of the European Union's executive commission, plans to attend the opening day of meetings following an introductory gala. Other notable attendees include President Javier Milei of Argentina, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, and Chinese Vice-Premier Ding Xuexiang. The forum will also discuss Syria's future after President Bashar Assad's recent fall.
Brende acknowledged that this year's meeting occurs amid complex geopolitical challenges. Despite these difficulties, he stressed the importance of collaboration to improve global conditions. "But still in that fragmented and partly polarized world, there are still areas where we can collaborate and ... we have big opportunities and responsibilities to find those areas where there is a possibility to improve the state of the world," he said.
The World Economic Forum continues to be a platform for addressing pressing global issues despite its reputation as a gathering for world elites. This year's focus on collaboration and technology aims to foster dialogue among diverse leaders and stakeholders worldwide.
