The Indian government is exploring the expansion of trusted source norms beyond telecom networks to encompass critical sectors, devices, and the IoT ecosystem. This initiative aims to bolster cybersecurity and data protection measures in the face of increasing cyber threats.
The Indian government is actively exploring avenues to extend the implementation of trusted source norms beyond the realm of telecommunication networks. This expansion aims to encompass critical sectors, devices, and the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem, according to a senior government official's statement on Tuesday.

Robust Cybersecurity Ecosystem Essential for AI Adoption
During an Assocham event focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI), National Cyber Security Coordinator M U Nair emphasized the significance of investing in a robust cybersecurity ecosystem. He highlighted the need for industries to prioritize cybersecurity measures while utilizing AI, given India's position as one of the most targeted nations in the cybersecurity domain.
Data: The Foundation of AI Effectiveness
Nair underscored the pivotal role of data in empowering AI tools. He explained that the algorithms employed by AI systems leverage data to generate models, predictions, options, and results. Consequently, the effectiveness of these tools hinges on the quality and content of the data they have access to.
Trusted Source Mechanism's Success and Potential Expansion
Nair lauded the success of the trusted source and trusted product mechanism introduced through the National Security directive on telecom security. He highlighted its effectiveness in ensuring the security and resilience of telecommunication networks. Building on this success, the government is now exploring the applicability of these mechanisms in other critical sectors, as well as extending their reach to devices and the IoT ecosystem.
Striving for a Network of Trusted Products
Nair expressed the government's aspiration to establish a network that exclusively comprises trusted products within the next few years. This objective aligns with the broader goal of enhancing cybersecurity and safeguarding critical infrastructure.
Responsible AI: Balancing Trust and Innovation
Earlier in the day, Amar Patnaik, a BJD leader and member of the standing committee on finance, public undertaking, and subordinate legislation, discussed the potential benefits of AI across various societal levels. He emphasized the importance of responsible AI, which entails ensuring public trust in AI systems. Patnaik advocated for regulations that strike a balance between preventing potential harms and fostering innovation, ultimately aiming to build trust in AI technologies.
Data Accessibility and Safe Testing
Patnaik stressed the significance of making AI accessible to everyone, which requires ensuring equal access to the necessary data. He also highlighted the importance of testing new AI concepts in secure environments to assess their societal impact. Patnaik expressed optimism about India's potential to emerge as a leader in AI by leveraging its unique data resources.
Data Sharing and Open Innovation
Patnaik raised concerns about the concentration of data in the hands of big tech companies and its implications for competition. He advocated for providing smaller businesses and startups with access to data to foster a more inclusive AI landscape. Additionally, he emphasized the role of governments in promoting open data sharing and creating an environment that encourages innovation and the development of new ideas.
