75 Tunnel Projects Worth Rs 49,000 Crore Under Construction in India, Says Nitin Gadkari
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has revealed that approximately 75 tunnel projects, with a total investment of Rs 49,000 crore, are currently underway in India. Speaking at the World Tunnel Day 2024 Conference on Safe & Sustainable Tunneling, Gadkari highlighted the significant potential within India's tunnel sector. He emphasised the government's commitment to developing world-class infrastructure to support India's ambition of becoming the third-largest global economy.

Current and Future Tunnel Projects
Gadkari noted that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has already completed 35 tunnel projects spanning 49 km, costing Rs 20,000 crore. Presently, around 75 ongoing tunnel projects cover a length of 146 km and involve an investment of Rs 49,000 crore. Additionally, there are plans for 78 upcoming tunnel projects worth Rs 1.10 lakh crore, which will extend over 285 km.
Infrastructure Development Priorities
The minister stressed the importance of tunnels not only for road networks but also for hydroelectric projects, metro systems, and railways. He mentioned a recent meeting with Assam's Chief Minister regarding a significant tunnel project under the Brahmaputra River. Gadkari expressed optimism about the opportunities available for contractors and consultants in this sector.
Gadkari reiterated the government's focus on enhancing infrastructure to international standards. He stated that achieving this goal is crucial for realising India's economic aspirations. The development of tunnels plays a vital role in this strategy, offering numerous possibilities across various sectors.
