TVS Motor Shares Rise Amid Srinivasan Family Dispute: Mallika Srinivasan, Lakshmi Venu Challenge Settlement
TVS Motor Company shares gained in early trade on Tuesday, October 13, as a family succession dispute involving members of the influential TVS business family drew attention to the group's ownership structure and leadership.
The dispute has brought the distinction between management control and economic ownership within the family into focus. Mallika Srinivasan, wife of TVS Motor Chairman Emeritus Venu Srinivasan, and their daughter Lakshmi Venu have said that no fair economic settlement has been reached within their immediate family. Their statement challenges the suggestion that the broader TVS family restructuring completed in 2020 settled the ownership interests within the Venu Srinivasan family.

The TVS family has interests across listed and privately held businesses in automobiles, tractors, auto components and engineering. While the dispute concerns family wealth and succession, it has also raised questions about how leadership positions, ownership rights and the allocation of economic interests are treated separately within a large promoter group.

TVS Motor is the group's most valuable listed business, with a market capitalisation of approximately Rs 1.86 lakh crore.
TVS Family Dispute: What Have Mallika Srinivasan and Lakshmi Venu Said?
Mallika Srinivasan and Lakshmi Venu said they had consistently sought to resolve the matter privately through family discussions. They argued that the broader TVS family partition of 2020 should not be interpreted as a settlement of their immediate family's economic interests as per Fortune report.
"We have consistently sought an amicable resolution through family dialogue and have refrained from discussing private family matters publicly," they said in a statement. "However, given the narrative now being presented, we believe it is necessary to clarify certain fundamental facts."
They maintained that a fair settlement would require a transparent process involving valuation, discussion and mutual consent. The statement also distinguished the restructuring of the wider TVS Group from an agreement dividing the economic interests within the Venu Srinivasan family.
"No economic settlement has been reached within the Venu Srinivasan family," the statement said. It added that the 2020 TVS family partition involved relevant stakeholders and was implemented after a formal process. By contrast, they said, "No agreement dividing these economic interests has been concluded."
The two also challenged the suggestion that all family assets belong exclusively to one individual who can distribute them unilaterally. "The suggestion that all family assets belong exclusively to one individual, who is therefore free to distribute them unilaterally, is neither an agreed nor an established position," they said.
Their central argument is that managing a business or holding a leadership position does not automatically determine an individual's economic ownership of family assets.
Meet The TVS Family
The TVS business family has interests across several major companies, with different members associated with automobile manufacturing, tractors and engineering businesses. The current dispute has drawn attention to the roles played by Venu Srinivasan, Mallika Srinivasan, Sudarshan Venu and Lakshmi Venu.
Venu Srinivasan: Venu Srinivasan is a prominent industrialist associated with the TVS Group and serves as Chairman Emeritus of TVS Motor Company. He is the husband of Mallika Srinivasan and the father of Sudarshan Venu and Lakshmi Venu. His family is at the centre of the current disagreement over economic ownership and succession.
Mallika Srinivasan: Mallika Srinivasan is the wife of Venu Srinivasan and the mother of Sudarshan Venu and Lakshmi Venu. She is the Chairman of TAFE, or Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited, one of India's leading tractor manufacturers. She has joined her daughter in stating that the immediate family has not reached a fair economic settlement.
Sudarshan Venu: Sudarshan Venu is the son of Venu Srinivasan and Mallika Srinivasan. He oversees TVS Motor Company, the group's flagship listed two-wheeler and three-wheeler business. His leadership role has become relevant to the dispute because Mallika and Lakshmi have argued that management responsibilities should not be treated as proof of ownership rights over the family's wider economic interests.
Lakshmi Venu: Lakshmi Venu is the daughter of Venu Srinivasan and Mallika Srinivasan. She is the Managing Director of TVS Holdings Limited, formerly known as Sundaram-Clayton Limited, and has held the position since 2022 after previously serving as Joint Managing Director. She is also Vice Chairman at TAFE, where her mother serves as Chairman. Lakshmi has joined Mallika in arguing that the family has not concluded an agreement dividing its economic interests.
2020 TVS Family Settlement
The wider TVS Group underwent a restructuring in 2020, when four family branches agreed to simplify holding structures, reduce cross-holdings and align corporate ownership more directly with the branches managing specific businesses. The agreement was reached on December 10, 2020, following a valuation and settlement exercise.
