UK PM Keir Starmer To Visit India This Week, Oct 8-9: What To Expect?

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to visit India from October 8 to 9. During this visit, he will meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss significant regional and global issues, according to the Ministry of External Affairs. This meeting occurs amidst ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.

The visit aims to enhance bilateral trade, following the recent signing of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between India and the U.K. The agreement is expected to open new market opportunities for both countries. Mr. Modi previously highlighted that Indian textiles, footwear, gems, jewellery, seafood, and engineering goods would gain better access to the U.K. market.

Focus on Economic Partnership

On October 9, both leaders will participate in the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai, where they will deliver keynote speeches. They are also expected to engage with business and industry leaders about opportunities arising from CETA as a cornerstone of future economic collaboration between India and the U.K., as stated by the MEA.

The discussions during Mr. Starmer's visit will cover various topics including bilateral trade and investment, technology and innovation, defence and security, climate change and energy, health, education, and people-to-people relations. These talks aim to strengthen ties across multiple sectors.

Strategic Partnership Goals

The MEA mentioned that both Prime Ministers would review progress on different aspects of the India-U.K. Comprehensive Strategic Partnership aligned with 'Vision 2035'. This vision outlines a ten-year roadmap of programmes and initiatives designed to deepen cooperation between the two nations.

Mr. Starmer's visit comes just two months before Russian President Vladimir Putin's anticipated trip to India. The ongoing war in Ukraine is likely to be a topic of discussion during bilateral talks between Mr. Starmer and Mr. Modi.

Market Access Benefits

The CETA agreement concluded during Mr. Modi's visit to London on July 24 is expected to make U.K.-made products like medical devices and aerospace components more accessible for Indian consumers and industries. This mutual market access aims to benefit both economies significantly.

Both leaders have expressed support for U.S. President Donald Trump's Gaza peace plan. Their shared stance on this issue highlights their commitment to addressing global challenges collaboratively.

This upcoming visit by Mr. Starmer underscores the importance of strengthening economic ties between India and the U.K., while also addressing pressing global issues such as regional conflicts and strategic partnerships.
