In the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged India and Pakistan to de-escalate tensions and seek a peaceful resolution. His outreach highlights the international call for restraint and accountability in the face of rising violence.
Following the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in the tragic loss of 26 lives on April 22, Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, reached out to Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. In his communications on Tuesday, April 29, he emphasized the urgency of de-escalation and advocated for a peaceful resolution to the heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. Guterres' call for maximum restraint highlights the international community's concern over the potential for an escalated conflict.
In addition to Guterres, Philemon Yang, the President of the 79th UN General Assembly, also expressed his concern over the escalating violence. Through his spokesperson, Sharon Birch, Yang condemned the targeting of civilians and called for the situation to be addressed diplomatically. This unified stance from the highest levels of the UN underscores the global call for peace and restraint.

The UN Secretary-General underscored his deep concern regarding the increased tensions between the two nations, warning of the dire consequences of a confrontation. Guterres extended an offer to assist in mediation efforts, aiming to prevent any tragic outcomes. His proactive approach reflects the international community's desire to see a peaceful resolution to this crisis.
Jaishankar, acknowledging the conversation with Guterres, expressed his gratitude for the Secretary-General's strong condemnation of the attack. He echoed the importance of accountability and justice for those affected by the Pahalgam incident. Jaishankar's commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice was clear, highlighting India's firm stance on terrorism.
"Received a call from @UN SG @antonioguterres. Appreciate his unequivocal condemnation of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Agreed on the importance of accountability. India is resolved that the perpetrators, planners and backers of this attack are brought to justice," Jaishankar shared on X (formerly Twitter).
On the other side, Shehbaz Sharif expressed Pakistan's stance against terrorism in all its forms and dismissed the accusations from India as baseless. Sharif emphasized the need for a transparent and neutral investigation into the Pahalgam incident. His response signifies Pakistan's rejection of the allegations and its call for a fair inquiry.
"Had a telephone conversation with UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres this evening. I reaffirmed Pakistan's condemnation of terrorism in all its forms, rejected baseless Indian accusations, and called for a transparent and neutral investigation into the Pahalgam incident. I…" Sharif posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack has not only brought global attention but also prompted high-level diplomatic conversations aimed at preventing further escalation.
