Understanding Gen Z Employees : What Are Their Priorities And Workplace Expectations?

With more than one-third of the world's population identifying as Gen Z-those born between 1997 and 2012-this generation is on track to surpass millennials as the most populous demographic. As they enter the workforce in greater numbers, Gen Zers are set to drive significant changes in workplace dynamics, redefining the essence of work and professional growth.

By 2025, Gen Z is projected to represent 27 per cent of the global workforce, according to the World Economic Forum. This growing presence is accompanied by a distinct shift in career aspirations and workplace expectations.

A 2024 survey by Apna.co, India's leading jobs and professional networking platform, gathered insights from 10,000 Gen Z professionals to better understand their career goals and priorities. The survey found that eight out of ten Gen Z respondents prioritise mentorship and clear career growth pathways over traditional factors such as salary, reflecting a strong emphasis on personal and professional development.

Additionally, workplace culture plays a crucial role in Gen Z's job satisfaction. The survey revealed that 74 per cent of respondents value a positive work environment, emphasizing inclusivity, respect, and active engagement. Gen Z professionals also demand consistent feedback, collaboration, and recognition. They reject working in isolation or receiving sporadic acknowledgment, preferring workplaces that align with both their personal and professional growth.

Workplace flexibility is another key factor shaping Gen Z's preferences. The survey highlights that 68 per cent of Gen Z employees favour a hybrid work model over fully remote or fully onsite roles. This preference suggests that they recognize the benefits of in-person collaboration and mentorship while also valuing the flexibility of remote work.
Beyond work arrangements, salary transparency and employee support are critical considerations for Gen Z job seekers. Studies indicate that 85 per cent of upcoming graduates will not even apply for jobs that do not disclose salary ranges. Additionally, 67 per cent of Gen Z workers expect their employers to provide mental health support.
Career development is another priority, with 42 per cent viewing training programs as the most crucial component of professional growth, while 38 per cent focus on promotion opportunities.

Despite widespread assumptions that Gen Z employees frequently change jobs solely for higher pay, research suggests otherwise. Only 25 per cent cite salary as their primary reason for job-hopping. Instead, 78 per cent switch roles in pursuit of career advancement, 73 per cent prefer a combination of formal training and hands-on experience, and 70 per cent believe structured mentorship is essential for professional success. These insights challenge traditional employer perceptions and underscore Gen Z's focus on long-term career development, meaningful work, and a supportive workplace environment.

However, despite their high aspirations, statistics show that the Gen Zers are struggling in this sluggish economy. According to a Bloomberg report, the jobless rate for the 20-24 age group in the US has risen by 2.8 percentage points to 8.3 per cent since a recent low in April 2023. This increase is seven times the deterioration experienced by prime-age workers between the ages of 25 and 54, whose unemployment rate rose more modestly to 3.5 per cent from 3.1 per cent.

A Harris Poll survey for Bloomberg News found that 80% of Gen Zers in white-collar positions believe it is difficult to find a better opportunity than their current one-at least 11 percentage points higher than other age groups.
