Unemployment In India Hits A 2-Year High, Rural Areas Bear The Brunt

India is facing a sobering challenge as its unemployment rate surged to the highest level in over two years, with rural areas experiencing the brunt of the crisis. According to data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), the national unemployment rate soared to 10.05% in October, up from 7.09% in September, marking the highest level since May 2021. The spike in joblessness is raising concerns and placing added pressure on policymakers.

A key driver of the rural unemployment crisis has been the weakest monsoon rains in five years, significantly impacting farming output in the world's second-largest producer of rice, wheat, and sugar. In contrast, urban areas have maintained relatively robust economic activity, with growth in manufacturing and consumption.

Unemployment

The Indian government only releases country-wide unemployment data on an annual basis, with quarterly updates on urban unemployment rates. The most recent official report, released in October, put the national unemployment rate at a much lower 3.2% for the 2022-2023 period. However, economists have increasingly turned to CMIE's more frequent and comprehensive data, which is based on monthly surveys of over 1,70,000 households, for a more accurate assessment of the labour market.

Despite expectations for India's economy to grow at more than 6% in the current year and the next, one of the fastest rates in the world, this growth has not been rapid enough to create sufficient job opportunities for the millions of people seeking employment. The latest CMIE data reveals that nearly 10 million individuals entered the job market in October, all vying for a limited number of job openings.

Adding to the employment woes, several Indian tech-services outsourcing firms, including Infosys Ltd. and Wipro Ltd., have recently announced a pause in their hiring of college graduates. This decision potentially leaves thousands of fresh engineering students without job prospects, which could exacerbate discontent among the country's youth. It also poses political challenges for Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he gears up for upcoming elections, seeking a third term in office.

The current state of India's labour market underscores the urgency of addressing unemployment and creating opportunities, particularly in rural areas where joblessness has hit a concerning high. As the government and businesses grapple with this issue, finding innovative solutions to stimulate job creation in both urban and rural regions remains a pressing concern to ensure a brighter future for India's workforce.
