Union Budget Aims to Position India’s Healthcare System as a Global Leader in Innovation and Medical Tourism
The Union Budget is not just a financial plan for the upcoming year; it serves as a foundation for India's healthcare system to become a global leader, according to Prathap C Reddy, Founder and Chairman of Apollo Hospitals. He emphasised that the budget's initiatives could significantly impact the healthcare sector.

Reddy highlighted the addition of 75,000 medical seats over the next five years and the establishment of Centres of Excellence in AI. These steps are expected to drive innovation in health technology and boost research and development investments. He believes these measures will strengthen India's position in the global healthcare landscape.
Medical Tourism and Global Healthcare
The announcement to promote medical tourism through private sector partnerships aims to attract international patients. This initiative, under the 'Heal in India' mission, seeks to position India as a preferred destination for affordable and high-quality medical care. Reddy noted that streamlined visa processes would support this effort.
Reddy also praised the government's decision to set up 200 Daycare Cancer Centres in district hospitals. Additionally, including critical medicines for rare diseases, cancer, and severe chronic conditions under customs duty exemptions is seen as a positive step towards improving healthcare accessibility.
Skilling and Education in Healthcare
The focus on skilling healthcare professionals through National Centres of Excellence and 50,000 Atal Tinkering Labs is expected to empower future medical innovators and startups. Reddy believes these initiatives will equip the next generation with essential skills in emerging technologies.
Kamineni Shashidhar, MD of Kamineni Hospitals, expressed support for increasing medical seats. He noted that this move addresses the shortage of healthcare professionals in India. However, he also pointed out challenges related to teaching quality and infrastructure in newly established medical colleges.
Research and Infrastructure Development
Shashidhar stressed the importance of budgeting for research and infrastructure development in medical education. He believes that focusing on these areas will ensure students receive quality training, ultimately benefiting the healthcare system. "It would be pertinent to say that we need to focus on budgeting on research and infrastructure development in medical education and health care," he stated.
Overall, these initiatives reflect a comprehensive approach to enhancing India's healthcare system. By addressing both educational needs and global positioning, India aims to strengthen its role as a leader in providing quality healthcare services worldwide.
