Union Minister Unveils Mechanism for Battery Energy Storage Systems Deployment in India

Union Power Minister R K Singh has finalized a mechanism to deploy funds for battery energy storage systems (BESS) projects in India. BESS will ensure 24/7 supply of renewable energy, addressing the challenge of excess solar energy during the day and wind energy in the evening.

The Union Minister of Power and New & Renewable Energy, R K Singh, has finalized the mechanism for deploying funds for various projects aimed at developing battery energy storage systems (BESS) across India. These systems play a crucial role in ensuring a round-the-clock supply of renewable energy.

Powering the Future: India Embraces Battery Energy Storage for Renewable Energy

Meeting for Operationalizing BESS Scheme

On February 22, Minister Singh chaired a meeting to finalize the structure for operationalizing the viability gap funding scheme for BESS development. The scheme targets a capacity of 4,000 megawatt-hours (MWh), as per an official statement released on Sunday.

Attendees and Discussions

The meeting was attended by officials from the power ministry, Central Electricity Authority, Solar Energy Corporation of India, Grid India, and NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd. (NVVN). Minister Singh emphasized the government's commitment to promoting BESS capacity through the viability gap funding scheme. This initiative aims to address the rapidly growing demand for power and facilitate the transition to sustainable energy sources.

Addressing Energy Storage Needs

The minister highlighted the significance of energy storage systems in managing excess solar energy during the day and wind energy in the evening. Without adequate storage, this excess energy would go to waste. The discussions centered around the ability of BESS to deliver electricity during peak demand periods while simultaneously stabilizing the grid.

Potential Locations for BESS

The ministry also identified potential locations for setting up storage systems in states with abundant renewable energy resources. This strategic approach aims to maximize the benefits of BESS by harnessing renewable energy sources effectively.

The government's proactive measures in finalizing the mechanism for BESS deployment demonstrate its commitment to promoting sustainable energy solutions. By addressing energy storage needs and leveraging renewable energy sources, India is poised to enhance its power infrastructure and meet the growing demand for electricity.
