UP Electricity Bills Hike Alert: UPPCL Imposes 10% Fuel Surcharge From June 1; Why Consumers Will Pay More
Electricity consumers across Uttar Pradesh are going to face a fresh financial burden from June, as the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has imposed a 10% Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge (FPPAS) on power bills. This is going to impact all categories of consumers, including domestic, commercial and industrial users across the state.

The additional surcharge will be reflected in electricity bills generated in June
What Is the New Electricity Surcharge?
Under the Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge (FPPAS) mechanism, electricity distribution companies are allowed to recover additional fuel and power procurement costs from consumers.
According to reports, UPPCL has notified a 10% surcharge for June, meaning consumers will have to pay extra over and above their regular electricity charges. The surcharge has been imposed to compensate for rising fuel costs and higher expenses incurred by power distribution companies while purchasing electricity.
The power demand in Uttar Pradesh has surged sharply due to rising summer temperatures and increased electricity consumption.
Recently, Uttar Pradesh emerged as the second-highest power-consuming state in the country after Maharashtra as heatwave conditions pushed power usage to record levels. Higher demand has increased pressure on the state's power infrastructure and forced utilities to procure additional electricity, often at higher market rates.
The state government has also directed power companies to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during peak summer months, which has further increased operational and procurement costs.
Not the First Fuel Surcharge in Recent Months
This is not the first time Uttar Pradesh consumers have faced a fuel surcharge.
Earlier this year, UPPCL had imposed a similar 10% surcharge for February bills, while a 1.24% fuel surcharge was levied on certain previous billing cycles.
How Will Consumers Be Affected?
The surcharge is expected to increase monthly electricity expenses for millions of households and businesses across Uttar Pradesh.
For domestic consumers, the impact will vary depending on electricity consumption levels. Commercial establishments, small businesses, and industries are also likely to see a rise in operating costs due to higher power bills.
