Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced that Uttar Pradesh will soon have 100 compressed bio-gas (CBG) plants, emphasizing their role in environmental conservation, augmenting farmers income, and promoting energy self-sufficiency. The state currently has 10 CBG facilities, with the newly inaugurated plant in Gorakhpur set to utilize agricultural residue, press mud, and cow dung to produce bio-gas and organic fertilizer.
Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced on Friday that Uttar Pradesh is set to have 100 compressed bio-gas (CBG) plants in the near future. Speaking at the inauguration of a CBG plant in Gorakhpur, Puri emphasized the importance of these plants in environmental conservation, increasing farmers' income, and promoting energy self-sufficiency.

Current Status and New Plant
Uttar Pradesh currently has 10 CBG facilities. The newly inaugurated plant, established by Indian Oil with an investment of Rs 165 crore, will process 200 metric tons of agricultural residue, 20 metric tons of press mud, and 10 metric tons of cow dung daily. It is expected to produce approximately 20 metric tons of bio-gas and 125 metric tons of organic fertilizer per day, contributing to enhanced agricultural productivity.
Green Hydrogen Policy and Investments
Puri expressed appreciation for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's Green Hydrogen Policy, which aims to protect the environment. He mentioned the anticipation of significant investments in this sector and revealed plans to set up green hydrogen plants in Sonbhadra district, a district adopted by him.
Farmers' Role in Energy Sector
The Union Minister highlighted the crucial role of farmers in the energy sector, linking it to the CBG plant. He recalled the initiation of gas cylinder distribution in the country 60 years ago and noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, the number of gas connections has increased from 14 crore in 2014 to 32 crore at present.
Ujjwala Scheme
Puri also mentioned the Ujjwala scheme, launched in 2016, which has provided free gas connections to 10 crore women, including 8 crore rural women. This initiative has significantly improved access to clean cooking fuel and enhanced the quality of life for millions of households.
The establishment of CBG plants in Uttar Pradesh aligns with the government's commitment to sustainable development and energy independence. By utilizing agricultural waste and promoting the use of bio-gas, these plants contribute to environmental conservation, support farmers' livelihoods, and bolster agricultural productivity. The state's Green Hydrogen Policy and the Ujjwala scheme further demonstrate the government's dedication to clean energy and social welfare.
