Uttar Pradesh's innovative approach to using solar power in its Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) projects will be highlighted at the Regional Conference on Good Governance. This event, organised by the Government of India, will take place in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, starting Thursday. The state has implemented solar energy in over 80% of its JJM projects, significantly cutting costs and reducing carbon emissions.

The success of Uttar Pradesh's solar model is expected to inspire other states. Senior bureaucrats from across the country will attend the Raipur conference to learn from this initiative. The state government emphasised that this model could be adopted nationwide due to its effectiveness in harnessing solar power for water supply projects.
Insights into Solar Power Usage
IAS officers from various states will gain valuable insights into Uttar Pradesh's use of solar energy in JJM projects. Anurag Srivastava, Additional Chief Secretary of Namami Gange and Rural Water Supply Department, will present on this topic under the "Innovation State" category at the conference. His presentation will focus on how solar power has enabled these projects to operate more cost-effectively and sustainably.
The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances has recognised Uttar Pradesh's initiative as a model for good governance. With 80% of JJM projects powered by solar energy, Uttar Pradesh is the first state to adopt solar power on such a large scale. This sets a benchmark for sustainable practices in the country.
Encouraging Nationwide Adoption
The conference aims to encourage other states to adopt similar models that save electricity and extend project lifespans. Officials believe that by showcasing Uttar Pradesh's success, more states will be motivated to implement solar energy solutions in their water supply projects.
Under the UP Jal Jeevan Mission, out of 41,539 total projects, 33,157 are utilising solar energy. These projects generate 900 megawatts of electricity daily, positioning Uttar Pradesh as a leader in solar power utilisation. Additionally, 12.50 lakh rural residents have been trained to operate solar-based pumps, ensuring proper management and maintenance of these initiatives.
"It is a proud moment for Uttar Pradesh to share its key solar initiative in Jal Jeevan Mission Schemes. Working on the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi we have achieved great success in reducing carbon emissions," says Brajraj Singh, Executive Director, State Water and Sanitation Mission.
The state's commitment to sustainable energy practices not only benefits its own citizens but also serves as an example for others. As more states consider adopting similar strategies, the potential for nationwide impact grows significantly.
