To enhance payment convenience for Indian tourists and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) has forged a strategic partnership with Network International. This collaboration marks the introduction of QR code-based Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments across Network International's extensive merchant network in the UAE.
Network International stands at the forefront of digital commerce across the Middle East and Africa (MEA), boasting a robust network of over 2,00,000 point-of-sale (POS) terminals encompassing more than 60,000 merchants. These merchants span diverse sectors including retail, hospitality, transport, and supermarkets, ensuring broad accessibility for UPI payments throughout the UAE.

The initiative is set to progressively roll out UPI acceptance across various establishments, including retail stores, dining outlets, and iconic tourist destinations like Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates. This expansion aims to cater specifically to the growing influx of Indian tourists into the UAE, projected to reach 5.29 million by the end of this year, driven by both business and leisure travel.
For Indian tourists and NRIs visiting the UAE, utilizing UPI for transactions will be a straightforward process:
Check Merchant Compatibility: Identify merchants displaying the UPI logo, ensuring compatibility with the UPI-enabled payment system.
Scan the QR Code: Using their UPI-enabled mobile application, customers can effortlessly scan the QR code presented at the merchant's POS terminal.
Enter Payment Amount: Input the desired transaction amount and verify the transaction details before proceeding.
Complete the Transaction: Confirm the payment securely using their UPI PIN, ensuring a seamless and secure payment experience.
The integration of UPI payments at Network International's POS terminals not only simplifies payment processes but also enhances security through QR-based technology. This method enables Indian tourists and NRIs with Indian bank accounts to make payments in the UAE conveniently, eliminating the need for currency exchange or alternative payment methods.
This collaboration between NIPL and Network International signifies a significant step towards promoting financial inclusion and digital payment adoption among the Indian diaspora and tourists in the UAE. As digital payments continue to reshape global commerce, initiatives like these are poised to play a crucial role in facilitating smoother and more secure financial transactions across borders.
With UPI gaining traction as a preferred payment method in India, its extension to international markets shows its growing relevance and acceptance on a global scale. As the partnership between NIPL and Network International unfolds, it promises to further strengthen the digital payments ecosystem in the UAE, setting a precedent for future innovations in cross-border financial services.
Furthermore, the introduction of UPI payments through this collaboration not only aligns with the UAE's vision of becoming a digital-first economy but also reflects NIPL and Network International's focus on enhancing customer convenience and accessibility in the realm of digital payments. This initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the UAE's efforts to embrace financial technologies and attract more visitors from India.
The partnership comes at a time when the UAE is witnessing a rapid increase in Indian tourist arrivals, driven by factors such as enhanced air connectivity, attractive tourist destinations, and growing business opportunities. By facilitating UPI payments, NIPL and Network International aim to capitalize on this trend, offering Indian tourists a familiar and efficient payment method that they commonly use back home.
Moreover, the use of QR code-based payments ensures a secure transaction environment, reducing the risks associated with traditional payment methods and enhancing overall consumer trust. This technological advancement meets the evolving needs of consumers.
As NIPL and Network International continue to expand UPI acceptance across the UAE, the initiative is expected to benefit not only Indian tourists and NRIs but also local businesses seeking to cater to the preferences of international visitors. By embracing UPI, merchants can attract a larger customer base and streamline their payment processes, thereby improving operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
