UPI Just Got Faster! Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm Users To See Quicker Payments from June 16

From Tomorrow i.e. Monday, June 16, your UPI transactions whether it's sending money, requesting payments, checking status, or validating details will become faster and smoother, thanks to a major update by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
NPCI issued a circular on April 26th where it announced that it is reducing the response time for various UPI (Unified Payments Interface) services, which will improve the overall digital payment experience for UPI users across India.

What's Changing with UPI from June 16?

If you've ever experienced a delay while transferring money or waiting for a payment confirmation on UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or BHIM, this update is great news for you.

The time taken for key UPI actions will be reduced, enhancing the overall user experience. Sending or receiving money will now take 15 seconds instead of 30. Similarly, the time to check transaction status and reverse a failed transaction will drop from 30 seconds to just 10 seconds. Even verifying a user's UPI address will be quicker, down from 15 seconds to 10 seconds.

Uses of this update

This update means that your money transfers on UPI will go through much quicker, and if anything goes wrong (like a failed transaction), the system will detect and resolve the issue faster. That's more convenience, less waiting, and better payment security.
Whether you're paying your cab fare, shopping online, or splitting a bill with friends, UPI delays can be frustrating. These new timelines aim to make everyday transactions seamless and reliable.

What Should Banks & Payment Apps Do?

NPCI has asked all banks, UPI service providers (PSPs), and partner merchants to upgrade their systems to handle the new faster response times. This means your bank or app provider should be ready to process transactions more efficiently by June 16, 2025. They've also been told to make sure these changes don't increase the chances of technical errors or failed transactions.
This change is being handled on the backend by banks and UPI apps. Users need to do nothing about it; just ensure your UPI app is updated regularly so you can benefit from the new faster UPI system.
