In the initial half of 2024, urban India has seen a significant purchase of televisions and large appliances, amounting to over Rs 60,000 crore through offline channels. Meanwhile, rural India has reported sales worth Rs 3,000 crore in the same period. This data comes from a recent report highlighting the growth in consumer tech and durables across the country.

The report from GfK indicates that India is currently the fastest-growing market for consumer technology and durable goods. This growth is supported by a strong Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) and decreasing inflation rates. The middle class in India is expected to surpass the upper class in spending by 2030, driven largely by growth in Asia.
Rural Market Potential
Despite rural India's smaller purchase value, its large population presents significant growth opportunities for consumer tech and durables. With improving infrastructure, increased consumer awareness, and rising aspirations, rural areas are poised for substantial market expansion. The rise in disposable income is evident from the increasing number of permanent houses in these regions.
The report highlights that retail networks are expanding rapidly in rural areas. Over 20 outlets per 100 villages are involved in selling televisions and refrigerators. Washing machines have a network of 15 outlets per 100 villages, while air conditioners have around seven outlets per 100 villages. This proliferation of retail channels indicates a growing opportunity for the tech and durable sector in rural India.
Retail Network Expansion
According to the GfK report, rural markets offer a promising opportunity. The 2011 census shows there are over 6 lakh villages in India, with 10% having populations exceeding 3,000. These villages account for 42% of the rural population. The expanding retail network is crucial for reaching these consumers effectively.
A recent study by NIQ-GfK revealed that urban India's offline retail channels generated over Rs 60,000 crore from TV and large appliance sales in the first half of 2024. Rural India contributed Rs 3,000 crore from similar categories in larger villages during this period.
This growth trajectory underscores the potential for both urban and rural markets in India's consumer tech and durables sector. As infrastructure improves and consumer awareness increases, both regions are set to experience continued expansion.
