US East Coast heat wave prompts fair closure and July 4 parade cancellations
A heat wave across the US East Coast pushed the heat index in Washington, DC toward 113°F, prompting the Great American State Fair to close temporarily and leading to cancelled Independence Day parades in parts of Virginia and Maryland. Authorities said the Capitol Fourth Concert would proceed, with adjusted public gate opening times due to the heat.

Travel and city services also adjusted as temperatures climbed from Boston to Pennsylvania. Amtrak cancelled some Northeast trains due to excessive heat risks. Officials warned that high heat can affect rail tracks. At Gettysburg National Military Park and in Norristown, Pennsylvania, plans shifted to cope with dangerous conditions.
US East Coast heat wave forces fair closure and parade cancellations
Early Friday afternoon, Freedom 250 said the Great American State Fair would pause operations. The group said the site would stay closed until 5 pm. The message appeared in a statement posted on X. The group said, "The safety and well-being of our guests, volunteers, performers, vendors, and staff is our highest priority,\" citing the heat.
Several local celebrations were cancelled because of the weather. Independence Day parades were called off in Leesburg, Virginia. Organisers also cancelled parades in Laurel and Takoma Park, Maryland. Officials did not list alternative dates in the announcements. The region continued to face extreme humidity alongside high temperatures.
US East Coast heat wave shifts Capitol Fourth Concert plans
Despite the conditions, the annual Capitol Fourth Concert was still scheduled for Friday evening. The US Capitol Police said the concert would start at 8 pm. The public gates would open at 7 pm due to the heat. The Capitol Police also urged guests to bring plenty of water.
The Capitol Police said non-glass water bottles and coolers would be allowed. The concert takes place on the West Lawn of the US Capitol. It was set to include Patti LaBelle, Alan Jackson, Chicago, and Kool & the Gang. The lineup also included the National Symphony Orchestra and several military and choral groups.
Heat precautions had already changed earlier concert plans. The Capitol Police barred the public from attending the concert rehearsal on Thursday evening. Officials linked the restriction to intense heat. The schedule also changed for programming reasons this year. The concert usually falls on Independence Day, but moved to July 3.
US East Coast heat wave coincides with Trump travel and fireworks schedule
The July 3 move was linked to Freedom 250 fireworks and National Mall events planned for the Fourth. President Donald Trump was travelling to South Dakota on Friday evening. Trump planned to deliver a speech and watch fireworks at Mount Rushmore. Trump was also set to speak at the National Mall on Saturday evening.
Saturday’s Washington event was described as a historically massive fireworks show. Meanwhile, New York City also saw extreme heat. The city’s heat index reached 106 degrees on Thursday. Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged residents to conserve power amid higher demand and unexpected load challenges.
Mamdani’s request drew political criticism as the heat persisted. Mamdani asked New Yorkers to set ACs to 78 degrees F, or 25.5 deg C. Mamdani also urged people to switch off unused lights and electronics. Republicans mocked the appeal, with Senator Rick Scott saying, \"This is Communism at work,\" and Senator Lindsey Graham adding, \"The Socialist Democrats are coming for your AC,\".
Across the region, officials continued to balance public safety with holiday plans. Event timings changed, closures were announced, and travel services reduced operations. In Washington, DC, organisers kept some major programmes running with added precautions. The wider East Coast remained under strain as high heat and humidity shaped public schedules.
