The United States government has entered a shutdown for the first time in almost seven years. This situation arose after Republicans and Democrats could not reach an agreement to fund the federal government. Amidst this, the US Embassy in India announced on X (formerly Twitter) that their account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, except for urgent safety and security updates.
US Embassy Shutdown Alert: Impact on US Embassy in India
Amid the shutdown, the U.S. Embassy in India announced that it would limit updates on its social media platforms until full operations resume. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the embassy stated, "Because of the lapse in appropriations, this X account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information."

This measure aligns with the broader protocol followed by U.S. federal agencies during government shutdowns, where only essential services and communications are maintained.
Why Did the US Government Shut Down?
The U.S. Congress was constitutionally required to pass annual appropriations bills by October 1 to fund federal government departments and agencies. In cases where full-year funding legislation cannot be agreed upon in time, lawmakers usually pass a Continuing Resolution (CR) to temporarily extend current funding levels and prevent a shutdown.
This year, however, Congress failed to pass any appropriations bills or a temporary CR before the deadline. While both the White House and Republican lawmakers proposed a "clean" CR to maintain current spending levels through November 21, Democratic legislators resisted, calling for the inclusion of permanent healthcare subsidies that are set to expire by year's end.
The disagreement over these additional provisions ultimately derailed any short-term compromise, pushing the federal government into a partial shutdown.
What Happens When US Shutdown?
During a shutdown, the U.S. government suspends all "non-essential" federal services, leading to widespread disruptions:
- Visa and passport services may experience delays or be temporarily suspended.
- National parks, museums and monuments are typically closed to the public.
- Federal agencies such as NASA, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Department of Education often reduce staffing or halt most activities.
- Research projects funded by federal grants may be paused or discontinued.
While essential services continue, they often operate under strained circumstances. Workers in critical areas such as air traffic control, TSA at airports, border security, the FBI, CIA, Coast Guard, and emergency medical services are required to work without pay until a funding agreement is reached.
