Wall Street traded higher as the clock ticks closer towards the US Federal Reserve's policy decision on Wednesday. The Dow Jones climbed to hit a new record high, while S&P 500 traded cautiously and Nasdaq gained marginally. The dollar is testing 100, trading closer to the level. Although investors are predicting a pause in key federal fund rates, but if Kevin Warsh, the new chair of the Fed, hikes rates, it will send the market into a frenzy.
Earlier this week, the Reserve Bank of Australia kept policy rates unchanged to 4.35%, but Bank of Japan did the shocking by hiking key benchmark rates by 25 basis points to 1%.
Kevin Warsh, backed by US President Donald Trump, is the newly elected chair of Fed, replacing Jerome Powerll. June 17th policy will be his first, and many are expecting that he will mostly not surrender to a 'dot' to the FOMC's quarterly rate projections.
Although, a pause in rates is expected, investors will eye Warsh's speech which could be more hawkish. Any dovish view is also on the cards.
As per ING, markets may also be surprised by a rethink of the Fed's balance sheet, which Warsh would be keen to reduce significantly. We're still in the dark about how to achieve this.
