The United States of America (USA) is celebrating Labor Day on September 7, 2026, which is a federal holiday for the country. Labor Day usually falls on the first Monday of every September, and it honors the American labor movement, including contributions of laborers and workers in developing the country. Labor Day is celebrated as a pride of the nation, and usually almost every service is closed so that families, friends, and citizens can together enjoy the day. US Stock Market Holiday:

As per the NYSE and Nasdaq holiday list, the US stock market will be closed on September 7 for the Labor Day and will resume trading for this week from September 8, 2026.

This means trading on all major indices such as Dow Jones, Nasdaq Composite, S&P 500, forex currency, bond market.

However, US stock futures are open for trading in foreign markets.

At the time of writing, the Dow Jones futures dropped by 169 points or 0.32% to trade around 53,271. On the contrary, the Nasdaq 100 futures traded higher by nearly 50 points or 0.2% to 29,614.75. Also, the S&P 500 futures is down marginally by 5 points to trade around 7,717.

The performance comes after Wall Street faced selling pressure last week on Friday. On September 4th, all three indices on Wall Street witnessed a downward trend. The Dow Jones took the worst hit with 271.86 points or 0.51% decline to end at 53,414.25. The Nasdaq Composite also plunged by 77.07 points or 0.3% to close at 26,506.99. While the S&P 500 dipped by 29.11 points or 0.4% to end at 7,718.60.

The Friday decline came after the nonfarm payrolls data which surged higher-than-expected by 162K. Market had predicted gains of just 50K jobs. This has reiterated the concern of monetary policy tightening and rate hike this month from US Federal Reserve.

Overall, in the last week's session, Dow Jones recorded 48.35 points weekly decline. But Nasdaq Composite index outperformed with 148.43 points gain and S&P 500 followed the upward trend with 58 points weekly surge.

US Labor Day Holiday: Is Post Offices Open?

The U.S. Postal Service will be closed on September 7, so no fresh delivery of mails on this day. This is applicable to all post offices across the country.

As per Morningstar, the USPS notes that you can still visit usps.com to order stamps and free USPS boxes, or to access services such as changing your address, holding mail, or renting a P.O. box.

Notably, FedEx and UPS will not operate on Monday. But there are some exceptions. For instance, FedEx's premium Custom Critical shipment service will operate as normal, and office stores will probably be open at modified hours based on the locations. In the case of UPS, it will not offer both pickup and delivery services except for Express Critical shipments.

Since Labor Day is a federal holiday, all banks, even those including US Federal Reserve banks and branches, will be closed on Monday. However, you can still check with your local branch on their availability.

Despite the bank holiday, online banking services like ATMs, mobile apps, and net-banking will be open 24x7 without any hindrance.

The majority of schools follow the federal day holiday pattern in the USA, so most likely they will be closed on September 7. Apart from this, it is a summer break in the country, so regular classes are not in session currently.

Non-essential federal government, state government, and other offices that fall under the government will mostly be closed on September 7. What could be open is essential offices such as hospitals.

US Labor Day: Grocery Shops & Retailers?

The majority of essentials, like grocery shops and retailers, will be open for regular hours on September 7, but some stores could follow a half-day pattern. For example, Kroger has said it will be operational as per normal hours on Monday, while Sam's Club warehouses will open at 8 am for Plus members and will start from 9 am for club members but close at 8 pm.

Other major retailers like Walmart, Publix, Trader Joe's, and Meijer have been open as normal on Labor day in the past. So the trend is expected to continue this year as well.

However, Costco warehouses have declared a holiday on Monday for Labor Day.
