US Stock Market: Tech Selloffs Pushed Nasdaq, Nasdaq 100 To Fall By 200-300 Pts; What To Expect On August 25?

The US stock market witnessed a mixed trend overnight as treasury yields remained steady and the dollar gained momentum. However, sharp selloffs in tech stocks toppled the Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq 100 by 200 points to 300 points. The S&P 500 is also under pressure, while the Dow Jones index recorded an uptrend with a cautious bias. Meanwhile, the US stock futures traded mildly higher as investors gear-up for mega quarterly earnings of Nvidia, Intuit, Zoom, Semtech, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Macy's. Also, investors will await the US consumer confidence data on Tuesday and personal consumption expenditure data on Wednesday.

Nasdaq Composite, Nasdaq 100 Falls

The tech-heavy index, Nasdaq Composite dropped 200.26 points or 0.8% to end at 25,980.19 overnight. While the Nasdaq 100 index plunged by 285.68 points or 0.97% to close at 29,023.18.

"The weakness in technology stocks comes as investors turn cautious ahead of two major events this week-Nvidia's earnings on Wednesday after the U.S. market close and the Federal Reserve Chair's keynote address at Jackson Hole on Friday. Both events are expected to provide important cues on the outlook for the AI-led technology trade and the future direction of U.S. monetary policy," said Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, Founder & CEO of HST Wealth.

Ahead of earnings, Nvidia dropped by 3%. Other tech giants like Micron slipped 6%, Tesla dropped 4%, Broadcom plunged 3%, AMD declined 3.5%, SpaceX slipped 1.44%, Samsung tumbled 2.14%, Intel lost 3.12% and Sandisk crashed 6.5%. Oracle and Palantir also declined by 2-3%.

Nvidia will report its earnings on Wednesday, at a time when there is concerns related to overspending for AI infrastructure by big giants.

Dow Jones, S&P 500

Meanwhile, Dow Jones and S&P 500 also traded volatile. Overnight, the Dow Jones Industrial Average index ended higher by 140.15 points or 0.3% to 53,417.16. While the S&P 500 index slipped by 21.51 points or 0.3% to close at 7,652.86.

"The major stock indexes fell in early trading Monday, dragged down by tech, but they pared their losses after CNBC reported that the Treasury Department could use its $1 trillion general account to fund its buyback plan. Yields fell after the report came out," said Joe Mazzola, Charles Schwab's Head Trading & Derivatives Strategist.

US Stock Market Outlook On Tuesday, August 25, 2026

Among corporate earnings, watch out for companies like Dicks Sporting Goods (DKS), Zoom Communications (ZM), and Intuit (INTU).

In economic data, stay tuned for ADP Weekly Employment Change, Philadelphia Fed Non-Manufacturing Activity, Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index, New Home Sales, and Consumer Confidence.

According to Schwab's strategist note, it's a big week ahead. Nvidia (NVDA) reports Wednesday and Marvell (MRVL) follows Thursday, offering the latest snapshots of the AI trade. On the economic front, Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation data is due Wednesday, and Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh is due to speak at the Fed symposium in Jackson Hole on Friday. Skeptical investors are looking for Warsh to convince them he's committed to the inflation fight.

Also, Schwab's note said, investors will then get a look at the second estimate of second-quarter gross domestic product, or GDP, on Wednesday. The first estimate in late July showed GDP expanding at an annualized rate of just 1.5%, down from 2.1% in the first quarter. Consumer spending remained strong in that report, however, so it may draw attention once again.
