US stock market traded broadly in a bearish tone on Tuesday, with Dow Jones continuing to trade below 53,000 mark. However, Nasdaq Composite index underperformed its counterparts to drop by nearly 140 points. S&P 500 index is down as well. Markets are focused on energy prices, upcoming CPI and PPI inflation data which will give further clarity on US Federal Reserve's policy outcomes in September 2026.
Meanwhile, the West Asia war continues to drive sentiment with the latest update being from Pakistani and Qatari mediators who have signalled optimism over US and Iran's peace deal. This could restore normalcy at Strait of Hormuz and further ease inflationary pressure and curb energy crisis.
Yields softened but credit-sensitive hyperscalers booked losses, with Oracle, Amazon, and SpaceX down more than 2%. Intel extended its 4% slide yesterday with a 1.5% drop as it raised its expected stock sale by $5 billion to $20 billion. Still, Nvidia rose 1% after raising $500 billion with banks privately for the buildout of more AI infrastructure, raising the leverage in the sector. The US will release its CPI tomorrow inflation after multiple FOMC members signaled a possible hike next month. SCMI and CoreWeave will report results after the bell, as per Trading Economics.
The big event this week is the release of US consumer price index data. It is expected that US CPI could see a mild 0.1% upside in July, with core CPI rising by 0.2% on a month-on-month basis.
Wall Street yesterday finished broadly volatile. However, both Dow Jones and S&P 500 still held around their record highs, while the Nasdaq Composite stayed closer to the 27,000 mark.
