US Stock Market Weekly Outlook For October 12-16; DJIA, Nasdaq, S&P 500 Futures Up Today; CPI Inflation Eyed

The US stock market is likely to move cautiously in the trading week from October 12 to October 16 as investors will await key CPI inflation and PPI data that will offer further clarity on the US Federal Reserve's next move in this month's policy. On Monday, US stock futures edged higher after the Dow Jones, Nasdaq Composite, and S&P 500 indexes recorded weekly gains of 0.5% to 1% last week. Major banks' earnings will also play a role in defining sentiments.

US Stock Futures Today

At the time of writing, the Dow Jones futures traded at 52,103, higher by 177 points or 0.34%. Nasdaq futures soared by 66.50 points or 0.21% to trade at 31,178.25, while S&P 500 futures surged by 21 points or 0.3% to trade around 7,880.50.

US stock futures edged higher on Monday as investors prepared for a busy week of major bank earnings, marking the start of the third-quarter reporting season. JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo are scheduled to report on Tuesday, followed by Bank of America and Morgan Stanley on Wednesday. Investors are also awaiting key inflation data, with the September consumer and producer price indexes due on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, as per Trading Economics.

The street is expecting Goldman Sachs to report $5.1 billion revenues in its quarterly result, while Morgan Stanley may hit $4.9 billion revenue, JP Morgan likely to generate $4.5 billion revenue and Bank of America seen to record $2.6 billion revenue. Also, OpenAI is expected to surpass $70 billion in annualized revenue by 2026-end.

Dow Jones + Nasdaq Composite + S&P 500

On October 9th, the Dow Jones Industrial Average or DJIA index surged by 423.31 points or 0.83% to close the week at 51,654.95. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.6% or 46.18 points to end at 7,811.54 and the Nasdaq Composite index gained by 0.64% or 172.83 points to close at 27,366.17.

Overall for the week of October 5-9, the Dow Jones surged 456 points or 0.90%, while S&P 500 outperformed with 81 points or 1.04% gains and Nasdaq rallied 140.24 points or 0.52%.

During the week, as per Charles Schwab, market leadership showed signs of rotation. Technology reached a new relative high versus the S&P 500 before reversing, while Energy and Health Care maintained relative strength. Meanwhile, Consumer Staples and Utilities, two traditionally defensive sectors, showed signs of improving relative trends.

US Stock Market Weekly Outlook For October 12-16

"My outlook for next week is "cautious." The primary considerations are: 1) Potential support beneath oil prices; 2) Negative momentum divergences in major indexes; 3) Improving trends in defensive sectors; and 4) Failed relative breakouts in Technology and High Beta," said Rachel Dashiell, Head of Technical Research & Strategy, Schwab Center for Financial Research.

According to her, evidence that would challenge this view includes lower oil prices or yields, improving index momentum, renewed weakness in defensive sectors, and broader stock participation.

Meanwhile, Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, Founder & CEO of HST Wealth said, weekend developments offered no decisive geopolitical relief. Iran described the latest US proposal as insufficient, while tensions involving Gulf infrastructure and regional shipping routes remained unresolved. Although negotiations may prevent an immediate escalation, the absence of a durable settlement means oil could react sharply to fresh headlines.

He also said, Brent crude settling near $104 a barrel continues to complicate India's macroeconomic outlook, limiting the relief from its recent pullback and keeping inflation risks elevated. Sustained high energy costs could restrict monetary-policy flexibility and squeeze margins across oil-sensitive sectors. Meanwhile, the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield holding near 5.24% keeps global financial conditions tight, supports the appeal of dollar-denominated assets and leaves emerging-market equities vulnerable to foreign outflows, even as a stronger Wall Street close offers near-term support.
