Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, an alumnus of IIT Kanpur and a bureaucrat-turned-politician, continues to make significant strides in the Modi 2.0 government. Retaining his role as the Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Vaishnaw has been at the forefront of India's push towards becoming self-reliant in the electronics and IT sector. Under his tenure, mobile phone manufacturing has seen a remarkable surge, with production values crossing Rs 4.1 lakh crore, a substantial increase from the figures recorded in 2014-15.

Vaishnaw's responsibilities also extend to the Railway Ministry and the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, showcasing his versatile leadership within the government. His efforts have been pivotal in scripting success stories around electronics and semiconductor manufacturing, alongside spearheading the enactment of the crucial Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act.
The DPDP Act, approved by Parliament last August after six years since the Supreme Court declared Right to Privacy as a fundamental right, aims to curb the misuse of individual data by online platforms. It includes provisions for setting up an independent Data Protection Board (DPB), ensuring similar access to justice across the country. Additionally, Vaishnaw's portfolio involves addressing pending issues such as implementing enabling rules for the DPDP Act and shaping the proposed Digital India Act, which aims to supersede the two-decade-old IT Act.
The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) is also working on draft legislation for Digital India that would regulate new-age technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), providing safeguards against emerging cyber crimes. This initiative is crucial for India as it seeks to bolster its capabilities in semiconductor manufacturing and AI, areas currently dominated by global giants like the US and China.
Vaishnaw's leadership has attracted significant investments in semiconductor manufacturing, including global storage semiconductor firm Micron's decision to set up a chip assembly plant in India. This move was followed by investments from Tata to establish a chip manufacturing plant in Gujarat and an assembly unit in Assam, among others.
As India gears up for the 2024 general elections, the Modi government has approved an allocation of over Rs 10,300 crore for the IndiaAI Mission over the next five years. This financial infusion aims to catalyse various components of the mission, including initiatives like IndiaAI Compute Capacity and IndiaAI Innovation Centre (IAIC), among others.
The industry has expressed satisfaction with Vaishnaw retaining his key ministry roles, highlighting the importance of continuity in policy-making and governance approach. Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of ICEA, emphasized that this continuity is critical for investor confidence and growth as India aims to transform into a global hub for electronics manufacturing by 2030.
In conclusion, Vaishnaw's multifaceted role in driving India's ambitions in electronics manufacturing and digital governance remains crucial. With ongoing projects and future initiatives aimed at enhancing India's technological infrastructure and regulatory frameworks, his leadership is set to play a key role in shaping the country's path towards achieving its Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
