On Friday, August 8, 2025, millions of women across South India will observe Varalakshmi Vratham, a deeply spiritual and cherished festival dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth, prosperity, and well-being. Falling on the second Friday of the auspicious Shravan month, this festival holds immense cultural and religious significance, particularly in the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and parts of Maharashtra.
Why Is Varalakshmi Vratham Celebrated?
Varalakshmi Vratham is celebrated to invoke the blessings of "Vara-Lakshmi", the boon-granting form of the Goddess. It is believed that worshipping this form is equivalent to worshipping the Ashtalakshmi, the eight manifestations of Lakshmi who represent different forms of wealth.

Eight Forms (Roop) of Goddess Laxmi
- Adi Lakshmi (Primordial Wealth)
- Dhana Lakshmi (Monetary Wealth)
- Dhanya Lakshmi (Agricultural Wealth)
- Gaja Lakshmi (Animal Wealth)
- Santana Lakshmi (Progeny)
- Veera Lakshmi (Valor)
- Vidya Lakshmi (Knowledge)
- Vijaya Lakshmi (Victory)
How Is Varalakshmi Vratham Observed?
On this sacred day, women wake up early, bathe, and prepare their homes and prayer spaces with traditional decorations. The rituals typically include:
Kalash Sthapana: A decorated pot (kalash) is placed with a coconut on top, symbolizing the Goddess herself.
Alankaram (Decoration): The kalash is adorned with sarees, gold jewelry, flowers, turmeric, and kumkum.
Puja and Vratam: Special slokas and Varalakshmi Vratha Katha (story of the vrata) are recited. Women tie a sacred yellow thread (charadu) on their wrists as a symbol of the vow.
Offerings: Prasadam such as payasam (kheer), vadai, fruits, and other delicacies are prepared and offered.
Social Aspect: Women invite other married women (sumangalis) to their homes and offer haldi-kumkum, bangles, and small gifts - a gesture of goodwill and shared blessings.
Varalakshmi Vratham 2025: Know History Behind This Festival
The origins of Varalakshmi Vratham are rooted in an age-old tale of faith and divine grace. According to Hindu mythology, a devout woman named Charumathi, living in the ancient city of Magadha, had a dream in which Goddess Lakshmi appeared and instructed her to perform a special vrata (vow) dedicated to her. Charumathi, with the support of her family, observed the vrata with utmost sincerity and devotion.
As a result, she and her family were blessed with immense prosperity, health, and happiness. Since then, the observance of Varalakshmi Vratham has become a sacred tradition for women seeking the Goddess's blessings for the well-being of their husbands, children, families and loved ones.
While the rituals remain deeply rooted in tradition, many families now blend old customs with modern conveniences. Virtual pujas, digital invitations for haldi-kumkum and eco-friendly decorations have become increasingly popular, especially among younger generations.
Temples across South India, including Sri Lakshmi Narayani Temple in Vellore, Kanaka Durga Temple in Vijayawada, and Mahalakshmi Temple in Mumbai, witness special pujas and massive turnout from devotees on this day.
