Vedanta Kickstarts Mining in Goa's Bicholim, Chief Minister Calls It a Historic Day

The resumption of mining activities in Goa by Vedanta Limited marks a significant milestone for the state, as announced by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. This development comes after the company successfully commenced operations at the Bicholim mineral block. Vedanta emerged as the successful bidder for this block in 2022, setting a precedent as the first auctioned mine to become operational in Goa since the Supreme Court's 2018 ban on mining activities.

Mining Resumes in Goa, Economic Hope Rises

Chief Minister Sawant hailed this occasion as a historic day for Goa, emphasizing the revival of a crucial economic sector. "It's a Historic Day for Goa! I congratulate Vedanta for the commencement of mining in Bicholim. This has revived one of the key economic backbones of the state of Goa," Sawant remarked. The mining ban had previously led to significant hardships for stakeholders, including local communities and the state's economy.

Expressing gratitude towards the Union Government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sawant acknowledged their support in resolving the mining ban issue. "I wholeheartedly thank the union Government led by Hon'ble PM Shri @narendramodi Ji for continued support to resolve the issue," he stated. The Chief Minister also highlighted the government's transparent process in auctioning mining blocks, which is expected to benefit various stakeholders by creating employment opportunities and enhancing state revenue.

Increased revenues from mining are anticipated to boost Goa's ability to invest in welfare schemes, infrastructure development, and progress towards achieving a developed status for the state. "The increased revenues shall lead to enhanced ability of the state to invest more in welfare schemes, infrastructure development and take it towards the goal of Viksit Goa," Sawant added.

This development not only signifies a turning point for Goa's economy but also showcases the collaborative efforts between state and central governments to address longstanding issues affecting local communities and stakeholders. The resumption of mining operations is poised to have a positive impact on employment and economic growth in the region.
