"We regret to inform that an unfortunate incident occurred at Unit-1 boiler of Company's Athena Power plant located at Singhitarai, Chhattisgarh on April 14, 2026, involving personnels of Company's sub-contractor, NGSL," the mining giant stated in an exchange filing.

The incident occurred on April 14, 2026, at Unit-1 of the company's Athena Power plant located in Singhitarai in Chhattisgarh. The explosion reportedly took place in a steel tube carrying high-pressure steam from the boiler to the turbine, triggering a powerful blast that caused severe burn injuries to several workers.

According to officials, the death toll from the explosion has climbed to 14. Four workers died on the spot, while others succumbed to injuries later. One more worker passed away during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, taking the total fatalities to 14.

Prafull Thakur, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Sakti district in Chhattisgarh, confirmed that several injured workers were shifted to Raipur for advanced treatment, while others continue to receive medical care at hospitals across Raigarh.

The company stated that multiple workers associated with its subcontractor were impacted in the incident.

"As of now 24 workmen of our subcontractor have been affected by the incident and 10 have succumbed to their injuries. The Company's immediate priority is to ensure the provision of best possible medical assistance and treatment to all those affected and doing everything possible to alleviate suffering of the near and dear ones of the deceased," Vedanta added.

Chhattisgarh Government Announces Rs 5 Lakh Compensation, Orders Probe

Following the incident, Vishnu Deo Sai announced compensation for victims. Families of the deceased will receive Rs 5 lakh each, while injured workers will be given Rs 50,000.

An inquiry into the incident has also been ordered, with authorities assuring strict action against those found responsible.
