Vietnam's Phu Quoc Island Boat Tragedy: 15 Indian Tourists Died, 21 Rescued; Emergency Contact Numbers
In a tragic incident, at least 15 Indian tourists were killed when a boat capsized at Phu Quoc island in Vietnam. The speedboat was carrying at least 31 Indian passengers along with four crew members and guiders. Among the ones who were succumbed to the tragedy included 13 men and two women, while reports say that 21 lives were rescued. An investigation has been set up by the Vietnam government. While the Indian Embassy at Ho Chi Minh City has released the names of the Indian tourists who died along with helpline and emergency contact numbers.

According to the details given by Vietnam-based VN Express media, a speedboat carrying 32 Indian tourists was headed from Hon May Rut Islet to An Thoi Port on July 11, 2026. The speedboat belonged to the Ocean Pear Island Company.
The boat was 400 meters from the Hon May Rut Ngoai when it suddenly capsized at around 1:00 pm, throwing everyone on board underwater. Nearby tourists and locals rushed to the overturned boat immediately to rescue trapped inside.
One boat owner revealed to VN Express that they reached within five minutes of the incident; however, the operation was difficult due to so many tourists trapped inside the boat. He said, "Only a few people were brought out conscious." The boat owner also revealed that during that time, the weather condition at sea was rougher. However, there was no rain, and many other tourists operated in the same area as well.
By afternoon itself, all 36 passengers on board were brought to the shore. However, 15 of them were confirmed dead, which Indian Embassy confirmed were Indians. Of them two were women and thirteen men.

"It is with profound grief that we share the list of 15 Indian nationals who have lost their lives in the tragic boat accident near Phuc Quoc Island today. The list has been recieved from the Vietnamese authorities," Indian Embassy said.
Majority of the Indian tourists who died were from Tamil Nadu; approximately 10 Tamilians lost their lives. While 3 of them were from Andhra Pradesh and two from Kerala state.

Indian Embassy said, "Exact details of the incident are being ascertained as search and rescue operations by local authorities are ongoing."

Meanwhile, Vietnam's Prime Minister, Le Minh Hung has offered condolences to the victims families and directed all ministries, agencies and local authorities to mobilize all available medical resources and medicine to treat the injured and to minimize loss of life and property, as per VNExpress.
