Vijay-Sangeetha Divorce Called Off? Wife Withdraws Petition: Know Why; Tamil Nadu CM & His Wife's Net Worth

The divorce proceedings involving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay and his wife Sangeetha Sornalingam have come to an unexpected halt after Sangeetha formally withdrew her petition before the Chengalpattu Family Court. The move brings the current legal proceedings to an end, although the court has allowed her the option to approach it again in the future, if required.

The Family Court accepted Sangeetha's request to withdraw the petition after she appeared through video conferencing on August 7 and informed the court that she no longer wished to continue with the case.

The court also issued notice to Vijay's side regarding the withdrawal request. As there was no objection from the respondent, the petition was permitted to be withdrawn, bringing the ongoing matrimonial proceedings to a close.

Importantly, the court granted Sangeetha the liberty to file a fresh petition in future, if circumstances warrant. This means the present case has been closed without the court examining or ruling on the allegations made in the original petition.

Court Did Not Decide Merits of the Dispute

The withdrawal does not amount to a judicial finding on the issues raised in the divorce petition. Instead, the proceedings have ended solely because the petitioner chose not to pursue the matter at this stage. Legal experts note that withdrawal with liberty preserves the petitioner's right to return to court later on legally sustainable grounds, should the need arise.

Vijay-Sangeetha Divorce Petition Since February

Sangeetha had approached the Family Court earlier this year seeking dissolution of her marriage. The petition reportedly cited mental cruelty and adultery among the grounds for divorce and stated that attempts to resolve the marital dispute amicably had not been successful.

The matter witnessed several adjournments over the past few months. During an earlier hearing in June, Sangeetha had already informed the court of her intention to withdraw the petition. On multiple occasions, both Vijay and Sangeetha remained absent from the proceedings, with their respective legal representatives appearing on their behalf. The court had also deferred hearings after neither party appeared in person.

With the latest order, the present divorce proceedings have formally come to an end.

Industry estimates suggest Vijay earned nearly Rs 200 crore for The Greatest of All Time (2024), while his upcoming film Jana Nayagan, believed to be his final film before entering full-time politics, is reportedly valued between Rs 250 crore and Rs 275 crore. His annual earnings, including brand endorsements, are estimated to exceed Rs 200 crore during peak years.

He was also reportedly among India's highest celebrity taxpayers in 2024, having paid nearly Rs 80 crore as advance tax.

Sangeetha Sornalingam was born into a Sri Lankan Tamil family and was raised in the United Kingdom. Throughout Vijay's decades-long film career, she has largely stayed away from public life and media attention.

According to India Times report, Sangeetha's estimated net worth is around Rs 400 crore. Although the divorce proceedings have now been withdrawn, earlier reports suggested that the original petition had also raised issues relating to long-term financial security and residential rights.
