Vistara, one of the prominent airlines under the Tata Group umbrella, has encountered a significant crisis, leading to the cancellation of approximately 50 flights across India today. The airline attributes this disruption to a shortage of cockpit crew, stemming from pilots reportedly taking leave in protest of their salary structure.
In a statement addressing the situation, Vistara expressed deep concern for the inconvenience caused to its customers due to numerous flight cancellations and delays in recent days. However, the airline refrained from providing specific details regarding the unavailability of crew members.

The pilots affected by the protest primarily belong to the ranks of the first officers operating the Airbus A320 fleet. The crux of the issue lies in their service contracts, which underwent substantial changes following the commencement of the merger process with Air India across various departments.
According to insider sources, the revised salary structure has resulted in a significant reduction in the earnings of Vistara pilots. Previously, pilots enjoyed 70 hours of guaranteed pay, but under the new framework, this has been slashed to 40 hours, aligning it with the compensation scheme for Air India pilots.
"This revision has led to a decrease in Vistara pilots' salaries by up to 50%," revealed one anonymous pilot. Another pilot echoed this sentiment, indicating that first officers have experienced a reduction in income ranging from Rs 90,000 to Rs 1,00,000.
The discontent among pilots is palpable, with many expressing dissatisfaction with the revised pay structure. "Many pilots are unhappy with the salaries. They will receive less money than pilots currently make since they would only be compensated for 40 flying hours," confirmed another pilot.
The standoff between Vistara management and its pilots underscores the challenges inherent in mergers and the subsequent restructuring of employee compensation schemes. While such mergers often promise synergies and efficiencies, they can also spark tensions as stakeholders navigate changes to their roles and remuneration.
