Vistara, one of India's prominent airlines, has recently announced a significant reduction in its operations, causing airfares to skyrocket by up to 25% on major routes. The decision to scale down operations comes amid a flurry of challenges, including pilot shortages and disruptions in service, which have culminated in a strain on the airline's operational capacity.
Vistara's move to reduce its daily flights by 25-30, roughly constituting 10% of its operating capacity, has triggered a notable surge in airfares across key routes. With the peak summer travel season looming, travellers have witnessed a substantial increase in fares on popular routes such as Delhi-Goa, Delhi-Kochi, Delhi-Jammu, and Delhi-Srinagar, according to reports from The Indian Express.
The airline, which typically operates around 350 flights per day, has been compelled to cancel more than 150 flights since April 1. This sudden disruption stems from an unexpected wave of pilot sick leaves reported at the end of March, exacerbating an already strained demand-supply scenario in the aviation sector.
While Vistara has refrained from specifying the duration of the capacity cut, indications suggest that it is likely to persist at least until the end of April. Consequently, affected routes are expected to witness sustained high fares during this period, posing challenges for travelers planning their journeys.
Notably, Vistara's decision to reduce operations comes at a time when the airline has showcased significant growth in approved domestic flights as part of the 2024 summer schedule. Compared to previous schedules, the current summer schedule features a remarkable 25.2% increase in weekly domestic departures by Vistara, reflecting the airline's ambitious expansion plans.
However, the recent disruptions, characterised by numerous flight cancellations and delays, have raised concerns among industry insiders, particularly regarding Vistara's impending merger with Air India. The airline's efforts to address these challenges include the implementation of a new pay structure, which has met with resistance from some pilots, leading to the protest and subsequent operational disruptions.
In response to the prevailing circumstances, Vistara has announced a reduction in operational capacity, primarily within its domestic network. The Tata Group-owned airline aims to bolster resilience and flexibility in its crew rosters, thereby mitigating the impact of ongoing disruptions on its services.
Meanwhile, the broader Indian aviation landscape reflects a modest year-on-year increase in domestic departures, with the current summer schedule witnessing a 6% rise compared to the previous year. Despite this growth, challenges persist, underscoring the need for airlines to navigate the complex dynamics of demand and supply amidst evolving market conditions.
As travellers brace themselves for heightened airfares and potential disruptions, stakeholders across the aviation sector remain vigilant, closely monitoring developments and adopting measures to ensure operational stability and customer satisfaction. In this dynamic environment, Vistara's strategic decisions and ability to navigate challenges will be closely scrutinised as it seeks to sustain its position in India's competitive airline industry.
