Vitalik Buterin, one of the co-founders of the Ethereum blockchain, the world's most well-known smart contract network, has become a crypto billionaire. As the price of ETH has risen to new all-time highs, the valuation of his crypto assets has surpassed the $1 billion mark.

Who is Vitalik Buterin?

Vitaly Dmitriyevich "Vitalik" Buterin is a Russian-Canadian programmer and author best known for being one of Ethereum's co-founders. Buterin was one of the first people to get involved with blockchain, co-founding Bitcoin Magazine in 2011. Buterin founded Ethereum in 2014.

Buterin has been generous with his crypto holdings as prices have risen. A COVID-19 relief fund for India received 100 Ether and 100 Maker (MKR) tokens from the Russian-Canadian programmer in late April.

According to some online crypto players, Buterin, who is 27 years old, could now be the cryptocurrency industry's youngest self-made billionaire.

In addition to his main account, which now has over USD 1 billion in ETH, his second account appears to have USD 2.8 million in ETH tokens. Following Ether's meteoric rise above the $3,000 price mark on Monday, Buterin's public Ether address, which he described as his main wallet back in 2018, has reached $1 billion in balance.

The world's largest altcoin is trading at $3,158 at press time, up 7.89 percent in the last 24 hours and 36 percent in the last seven days, according to CoinGecko data.

According to on-chain data from Etherscan, the address currently holds around 333,500 Ether (ETH), which is now worth $1.029 billion, after ETH more than quadrupled in value from around $700 at the start of 2021.
