Vodafone Idea Q1 Results FY27: Net Loss Narrows Sharply as ARPU, Subscribers and Data Usage Rise
Financially stretched telecom operator Vodafone Idea delivered an encouraging June-quarter performance, with its net loss narrowing sharply to Rs 3,754 crore as improving revenue, stronger operating efficiency and rising customer monetisation offered fresh signs of a gradual turnaround. The latest numbers are particularly significant for the debt-laden company as its aggressive network expansion starts showing up in key operating metrics.
Vodafone Idea Q1 Results FY27: Revenue, EBITDA Show Stronger Operating Performance
Vodafone Idea's operational performance strengthened noticeably during the quarter, with revenue from operations rising to Rs 11,689 crore from Rs 11,023 crore a year earlier. EBITDA increased to Rs 5,034 crore from Rs 4,612 crore, while the EBITDA margin expanded to 43.1% from 41.8%, pointing to healthier operating leverage and improving cost efficiency.

The comparison with the previous quarter needs to be viewed carefully. Vodafone Idea had posted a headline profit of Rs 51,970 crore in Q4FY26, but that figure was inflated by a one-time exceptional gain of Rs 58,116 crore linked to government relief on AGR dues. After excluding this exceptional benefit, the company had recorded a loss of Rs 5,286 crore, making the latest quarter's narrower loss a more meaningful indicator of its underlying operational progress.
Vodafone Idea ARPU Growth Accelerates, But Gap With Airtel, Jio Remains Wide
The standout operating metric in the Vodafone Idea Q1 results was ARPU, which climbed 10.2% year-on-year to Rs 195. The rise signals stronger customer monetisation and a healthier subscriber mix, particularly as more users shift towards higher-value 4G and 5G services.
However, Vodafone Idea continues to trail its larger rivals. Bharti Airtel reported an ARPU of Rs 264, while Reliance Jio recorded Rs 215. This persistent ARPU gap remains a critical challenge for Vodafone Idea because stronger per-user revenue gives competitors greater financial flexibility to invest in network quality and spectrum.
Vodafone Idea Subscriber Base Records Crucial Turnaround
The company's subscriber numbers provided another encouraging signal for the embattled telecom operator. Vodafone Idea's total subscriber base edged up to 193.1 million from 192.8 million in the March quarter.
Although the increase was relatively small, it carries outsized importance after years of persistent customer losses. The company said its 4G and 5G subscriber base rose to 130.1 million from 127.4 million a year earlier, indicating a gradual migration towards higher-revenue customers.
Vodafone Idea Data Consumption Hits 88.4 Petabytes, Network Demand Rises
Vodafone Idea's data business also delivered robust growth momentum. Daily data usage jumped 27.9% year-on-year to 88.4 petabytes from 69.1 petabytes. The sharp rise highlights growing customer engagement with Vodafone Idea's data services, but it also creates an ongoing requirement for greater network capacity and infrastructure investment.
Vodafone Idea 5G Rollout Accelerates
The company's ambitious network expansion program is gaining pace. Vodafone Idea said its 5G services now cover more than 200 cities across 17 key circles. The operator has also added more than 15,600 broadband towers over the past year, taking its total to nearly 205,000. Its 4G population coverage has reached 87%, with the company targeting coverage of more than 95% across its 17 circles.
