Bengaluru news: Karnataka is on the verge of implementing a wage revision that could possibly make the state have the highest minimum wages for skilled and unskilled labourers in the country. There are speculations, according to official sources, that very soon a notification regarding the wage revision will be issued by the authorities regarding the same .
What are the minimum wage categories and proposed changes?
In Karnataka, there are about 1.7 crore workers in various sectors, including both organised and unorganised jobs. Trade unions have been pushing for a minimum wage hike to Rs. 35,000 per month, especially because of the high living costs in cities like Bangalore. Workers across various sectors earn almost Rs. 500 per day on average, which varies in different sectors. Some sectors have an even lower per-day wage for workers. This has raised concerns, especially among worker groups who feel the pay should be fair across all industries.

Karnataka could soon offer the highest minimum wages in India. A draft of the proposed wage changes will be reviewed by the Karnataka Minimum Wage Advisory Board. Once the board gives its suggestions, the state government will decide whether to approve them or make changes. If approved, this could bring a major shift in how workers are paid across the state.
Government's Stance on Wage Revision
The government of Karnataka is currently considering demands from both employers and workers to ensure a balanced decision, and any major decision will be announced probably in two weeks. After approval from the Karnataka Minimum Wage Advisory Board, "We are going to revise the existing wages, and Karnataka's minimum wages are expected to be the highest in India," official sources quoted in an Indian Express report.
Impact of the wage Revision on workers In Bengaluru
If the proposed wage hike is implemented, Karnataka will definitely set a standard for labour wages across India. This wage revision will also improve the standard of living for workers in Bangalore since it's a very costly locality, and people with low incomes are finding it very difficult to survive in the residing inflationary economy. Additionally, the wage revision could have a cascading effect on other states, prompting them to consider tweaking their minimum wage patterns for their workers.
The final decision is expected to be made soon, and it will be interesting to see if a fair and sustainable wage structure is given for all workers in Bengaluru and other cities in Karnataka. The wage revion will also help in the economic growth of the state and beyond.
