Weather Today: IMD Issues Heatwave Alert from April 16-18, Check Today’s Temperature and Precautions

Several parts of India are set to experience rising temperatures from April 16. Heatwave conditions are expected in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, East and West Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Telangana will face hot and humid conditions. IMD has issued Yellow and Orange alerts, urging precautions like staying hydrated, avoiding sun exposure, and protecting vulnerable groups from heat-related health risks.

Delhi Temperature Today: Alert Across North India

Delhi will experience another heat wave beginning on April 16 after a small relief from the intense heat brought on by recent rain showers and thunderstorms. As the western disturbance's impact over the area decreases and the hot weather returns, the temperature is predicted to rise.

Weather Today

IMD has predicted a gradual rise in temperatures by 4-6°C over the next three days across India. States like Punjab, Haryana, East Rajasthan, and West Madhya Pradesh are likely to witness heatwave conditions between April 16 and 18. East Rajasthan may also experience severe heatwave conditions in isolated areas on April 18, while West Rajasthan is expected to be among the worst-hit regions, facing a spell of severe heat between April 16 and 18.

IMD in a statement, "Heat wave conditions at some places with severe heat wave conditions likely at many places of West Rajasthan; heat wave conditions in isolated pockets over Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, East Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat state. Hot and humid weather likely at isolated places over Gujarat state."

Weather Today: Southern India Likely To Face Heat and Humidity in Coastal Regions

In southern India, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam are likely to experience heatwave conditions. Additionally, isolated areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Telangana are also expected to see rising temperatures. The IMD has forecast hot and humid weather in parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, adding to the discomfort even if official heatwave thresholds are not crossed.

Gradual Temperature Build-Up Over Central India

In central India, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, temperatures are expected to remain stable for a day before rising gradually by 2-3°C. Though not as intense as the northern belt, the increasing temperatures will still contribute to discomfort and potential health risks, especially for vulnerable groups.

Heatwave Alert in Western India: Temperature in Maharashtra and Gujarat

Parts of western India are also under the radar, with Maharashtra likely to witness a temporary drop in temperature by 2-3°C over the next few days. However, this relief is expected to be short-lived, as temperatures may rise again by 2-4°C soon after. In Gujarat, a similar trend is expected, with a 2-4°C temperature rise over the next six days. Heatwave conditions are likely to develop between April 15 and 17. West Rajasthan, meanwhile, is already experiencing heatwave conditions on April 14 and 15, with more intense heat expected in the following days.

IMD Weather Prediction: Heatwave From April 16

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra told The Times of India, "We are currently not having heatwave conditions in any part of India because of the recent thundershower activity in various pockets. However, we do expect an upcoming heatwave spell for three-four days, mainly in Gujarat and West Rajasthan."

Yellow and Orange Heatwave Alerts

The IMD has issued Yellow and Orange Alerts for several regions based on the severity of the forecast. Yellow Alert Areas indicate moderate temperatures. Meanwhile, orange alert areas suggest high temperatures with a greater chance of heat-related illnesses, particularly for people exposed to the sun for long hours or those engaged in heavy outdoor work. Vulnerable groups face a higher health risk in these areas.

How to Protect Yourself from Heatwave?

While the heat is generally tolerable for the general public, it could pose moderate health risks for vulnerable groups such as infants, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses. As the heatwave conditions intensify, extra care is needed to protect oneself and others, especially the elderly, children, and those with existing health issues.

Precautions to take in heatwave affected areas:

  • People are advised to avoid heat exposure as much as possible.
  • Try to wear light-coloured and loose-fitting cotton clothes.
  • Use hats, umbrellas, or clothes to cover the head.
  • People are strongly advised to stay cool, avoid dehydration, and drink plenty of fluids even if you don't feel thirsty.
  • ORS, lemon water, buttermilk, lassi, and rice water are recommended for maintaining hydration.
  • With temperatures climbing steadily across many parts of the country, it is advised to stay informed through regular weather updates and follow all precautions issued by the authorities.
