Weather Today, June 22: IMD Issues Heavy to Extremely Heavy Rain Alert Till June 25; Check Affected States
As the southwest monsoon is making its way into India, the India Meteorological Department has issued a fresh weather alert for several parts of the country, forecasting heavy rainfall, very heavy rain, thunderstorms with lightning, strong winds, and isolated heatwave conditions over the coming days.

Many states are expected to experience a major change in weather today, providing much-needed relief from the scorching summer in the north. However, concerns over flooding,waterlogging,and landslides in some areas are also a big concern.
As per the latest IMD weather forecast, Northeast India, Kerala, Karnataka, West Bengal, Sikkim, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh are among the states that are likely to experience active monsoon conditions.
Residents of these regions have been advised to stay updated with the latest weather news, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall, and follow advisories issued by the weather department.
IMD Predicts Heavy to Extremely Heavy Rainfall Till June 25
According to the India Meteorological Department's latest weather update, very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely to be seen over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till June 25. Continuous heavy rainfall may lead to flash floods, urban flooding, overflowing rivers, and landslides in some regions.
A yellow alert has been issued for Mumbai for June 22 and 23, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph at isolated places.
Similarly, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are expected to receive intense rainfall through June 22, with some places likely to record very heavy downpours.
In southern India, Kerala and Mahe are likely to witness heavy rainfall between June 21 and June 23, followed by another spell from June 25 to June 27.
Meanwhile, Coastal Karnataka is expected to receive heavy rainfall till June 24, while North Interior Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka could experience heavy showers on June 22 and June 23.
The IMD has warned that low-lying areas can be waterlogged while hilly regions may be vulnerable to landslides due to persistent rainfall.
Thunderstorm, Lightning and Strong Wind Alert
Apart from heavy rain, the IMD thunderstorm alert warns of lightning, thunderstorms and gusty winds across several states, including Karnataka, Kerala and parts of eastern and northeastern India.
People have been advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees, unplug electrical appliances if required, and avoid travelling through flood-prone areas during heavy rainfall.
Heatwave Alert Continues in Parts of Central India
Even as monsoon activity is getting strong in many states in India, heatwave conditions have not completely subsided.
The weather department has forecast heatwave conditions over East Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and Telangana till June 22. Day temperatures are expected to rise above normal in these regions before monsoon rains provide relief.
Southwest Monsoon Likely to Advance Further
The southwest monsoon 2026 is expected to make further progress over the next few days. The IMD has said weather conditions are becoming favourable for the monsoon to advance into more parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and Chhattisgarh around June 23.
