Suvendu Adhikari was born on December 15, 1970, in Karkuli village in Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal. He hails from a politically influential family that has played a significant role in shaping regional politics.
His father, Sisir Adhikari, is a veteran leader and former Minister of State in the Manmohan Singh government. Politics runs deep in the Adhikari household. His brothers, Dibyendu Adhikari and Soumendu Adhikari, have also held key political positions, strengthening the family's influence in coastal Bengal, particularly in Purba Medinipur.
Suvendu Adhikari's Political Career
Suvendu Adhikari began his political journey in 1995 as a councillor from the Indian National Congress in Kanthi Municipality. In 1998, he joined the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), and began his rise in West Bengal politics.
Adhikari went on to serve as a Member of Parliament from Tamluk and later transitioned to state politics, winning from Nandigram in 2016. He also served as Transport Minister in the government led by Mamata Banerjee.
In December 2020, Suvendu Adhikari made a dramatic political shift by leaving the TMC and joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His defection proved pivotal in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. Currently, Suvendu Adhikari serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Suvendu Adhikari has also faced controversies over the years. As per his 2026 election affidavit, he has 25 criminal cases registered against him, most of which were filed after his switch from TMC to BJP in 2020.
He was also named in allegations related to the Saradha chit fund scam. However, Adhikari has consistently denied all charges, calling them politically motivated. As of October 2025, no charges have been proven in court.
