The West Bengal government has declared public holidays in constituencies going to polls on April 23 and April 29. These holidays fall under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, meaning banks, government offices, and several notified institutions will remain officially closed in these regions.

A wide range of services will see partial or full closure on voting days. Bank branches in polling constituencies may either remain shut or operate with limited staff so employees can cast their votes. However, digital services such as online banking, mobile apps and ATMs will continue without disruption.

Educational institutions, including schools and colleges, will also remain closed in affected areas. Some have already shifted to online classes to maintain continuity. Government offices will suspend routine work, while private establishments-ranging from shops and factories to commercial units and tea gardens-have been directed to grant paid leave to employees.

Importantly, workers whose voter registration is in a different constituency will still be entitled to paid leave. This rule will also apply in case of any re-poll.

Liquor Shop to Stay Close Tomorrow, 23 April 2026

To maintain order during the election period, the West Bengal Excise Department has imposed a series of dry days. Liquor sales will remain prohibited during both polling and counting phases, a measure aimed at ensuring a peaceful voting environment.

Hospital, Medical Store, Public Transport and Essential Services to Remain Operational

Even as multiple sectors pause operations, essential services will continue uninterrupted. Hospitals, pharmacies, emergency services, public transport, and utilities will function normally, ensuring that daily life remains stable while the state goes to vote.
