Kirandeep Kaur murder trial date and court schedule
The murder trial is due to start on April 12, 2027, when a jury is expected to hear evidence. The court was told James remains in custody. It also heard James now uses a wheelchair. A BBC court report said prosecutor Mukul Chawla noted James was fully ambulatory up until the time of the offence.
Metropolitan Police response to Kirandeep Kaur killing
Detective Chief Inspector Allam Bhangoo of the Metropolitan Police spoke after the killing. "This is a shocking incident which has tragically resulted in one woman losing her life and another man in hospital with injuries,\" Bhangoo said at the time. \"We know this incident will have caused significant concern in the community and residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area over the coming days,\" Bhangoo added.
Anti-Sikh hate crime concerns after Kirandeep Kaur stabbing
After the attack, community groups raised concerns that the case could be an anti-Sikh hate crime. The worries came weeks after a separate case in south-east England. In May, Vickrum Digwa, 23, was convicted of murdering teenager Henry Nowak. Nowak was 18 and died after being stabbed.
Digwa was later sentenced to life imprisonment. The sentence followed a highly charged trial. During that case, Digwa attempted a religious defence for the murder weapon. The Sikh Network later shared findings from a spot survey in Parliament. It said 40 per cent of respondents had experienced or witnessed anti-Sikh hate crimes since the Digwa trial.
Kaur’s family in Punjab spoke to the BBC after the death. The family said they never thought such a thing could happen to Kaur in London. The case is set to return to court ahead of the April 2027 trial date. James remains in custody as proceedings continue.
