WFH Announced in Delhi: Govt Employees to Work From Home 2 Days/Week, Private Companies Advised to Follow

Rekha Gupta, the Chief Minister (CM) of the Delhi, on Thursday unveiled a series of fuel-conservation measures, including a mandatory two-day work-from-home policy for state government employees, following a nationwide appeal by Narendra Modi urging citizens to reduce fuel consumption and adopt more sustainable habits.

WFH Announced! Delhi Government Mandates Work From Home Two Days a Week

As part of the new initiative, all Delhi government departments will implement work from home for two days every week in an effort to cut official fuel usage and lower transportation-related costs.

Addressing a press conference, Gupta said the move is intended to align the state administration with the Prime Minister's broader call for conservation and responsible consumption.

WFH Announced

According to the Chief Minister, the policy will take effect across government offices, while departments have also been instructed to minimise vehicle usage and rely more heavily on public transportation wherever feasible.

Private Companies Advised to Adopt Two-Day Work From Home Policy

The Delhi government will also issue an advisory to private companies, corporate offices and institutions encouraging them to introduce work from home for two days each week.

Although the directive will not be legally binding on private employers, the Labour Department will monitor the extent to which organisations adopt the recommendation.

The government believes that broader participation from the private sector could significantly reduce daily traffic volumes and fuel consumption across the national capital.

Petrol and Diesel Quotas for Officials Cut by 20%

In another major step, the Delhi government has reduced the monthly petrol and diesel allocation for official vehicles used by officers and senior functionaries by 20%. Officials who were previously entitled to 200 to 250 litres of fuel per month will now receive between 160 and 200 litres.

Gupta said departments have already curtailed fuel expenditure by limiting the use of official vehicles to essential purposes and shifting to public transport wherever practical.

'Metro Monday' Introduced for Ministers and Government Officers

To reinforce the message of fuel conservation, the Chief Minister announced that all ministers and government officers will travel by the Delhi Metro every Monday under a new initiative titled "Metro Monday."

The campaign is designed both to reduce fuel consumption and to encourage greater use of mass transit systems.

The Delhi government's measures follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent appeal urging citizens to adopt lifestyle changes aimed at conserving fuel and strengthening economic self-reliance.

Among the steps suggested by the Prime Minister were increased use of metro rail and public transport, carpooling when private vehicles are necessary, greater reliance on railways for freight movement and accelerated adoption of electric vehicles.

Modi also encouraged citizens to postpone discretionary foreign travel for a year, prioritise Swadeshi products, reduce cooking oil consumption, embrace natural farming practices and moderate purchases of gold.

The Delhi government's decision marks one of the first large-scale administrative responses to the Prime Minister's call, translating national recommendations into concrete policy action.

By combining work-from-home arrangements, reduced fuel quotas and mandatory public transport use, the administration aims to lower government fuel costs and set an example for businesses and residents across the capital.

The initiative is expected to reduce congestion, curb petrol and diesel consumption and promote wider adoption of sustainable commuting practices in Delhi.
