WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal SIM-Binding Rules From January: What Users Must Do Before December 31

Millions of users of WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and other messaging platforms could face changes in how they access their accounts under India's new SIM-binding requirements. The rules require messaging services to maintain a link between an account and the mobile number's SIM card, with December 31 set as the compliance deadline and the new requirements expected to take effect from January 1.

The move is part of the government's efforts to curb cyber fraud involving mobile numbers and messaging accounts. Under the proposed framework, completing a one-time verification may no longer be sufficient in every situation if the SIM associated with an account is no longer present or active.

For users, the change could be particularly relevant when switching phones, removing a SIM card, using a messaging account on a computer or tablet, or keeping an account linked to a number that is no longer in service. The exact impact will depend on how individual apps implement the requirements.

What Is SIM Binding Rule And How Will It Work?

Most messaging apps currently verify a phone number when an account is first registered. Users receive a verification code through SMS or a phone call, and once the number is verified, they can generally continue using the account without repeating the process every time they open the app.

SIM binding introduces an additional connection between the messaging account and the SIM associated with the registered number. Instead of relying only on the initial verification, services may need to check that the relevant SIM remains available in the device under the new requirements.

This could create problems for people who remove their registered SIM, switch to a different number or continue using an account after the original number has become inactive. Depending on the app's implementation, users may need to restore the registered SIM or complete additional verification before regaining access.

The change does not necessarily mean that every account will stop working as soon as a SIM is removed. The practical outcome will depend on the final compliance measures and how each platform applies them.
