WhatsApp Username Feature: How To Reserve, Launch Date & Everything You Need To Know

WhatsApp has come up with a fresh new feature that will let users connect with one another without exchanging phone numbers. The Meta-owned messaging platform announced the rollout on Monday, June 29 giving its over 3 billion users a head start on claiming their preferred handle before the feature goes fully live later this year.

WhatsApp Username Feature

The reservation window is open now, even though the username system itself won't be functional until the rollout begins.

How to reserve a username On Whatsapp

Setting up a username takes only a few seconds on the latest version of the app. Users can follow the step below to reserve the Username:

Step 1: Go to Settings, then Account,
Step2 : Select Username option
Step 3: Next either type in your preferred handle or use WhatsApp's built-in username generator if their first choice is unavailable.

Creators, small businesses, and organisations get an added option: they can claim the same username they already use on Instagram or Facebook, allowing them to keep a consistent identity across Meta's platforms.

The rules for picking Usernames of WhatsApp

Usernames must be between 3 and 35 characters, made up only of lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores, and must include at least one letter.

Names cannot start with "www." or end in domain-style suffixes such as ".com" or ".net." WhatsApp is also blocking handles that attempt to impersonate real people, businesses, or brands, with verification in place for popular accounts.

WhatsApp says this boosts privacy

Once the feature is fully active, anyone who knows your exact username will be able to message you without ever seeing your phone number. Unlike Instagram or other social platforms, WhatsApp says there will be no searchable directory and no algorithmic suggestions. So contact will only happen if someone already knows your precise handle. For users who want an extra layer of control, WhatsApp has built an optional "username key," a secondary code that others must know in addition to the username itself before they can start a conversation.

What happens to your phone number

Phone numbers aren't going away. They'll continue to function as before for existing contacts and conversations. The change only affects how new contacts can find and message you for the first time. For this usernames give users the choice of what to share, rather than replacing the current system outright.

Whatsapp Username Rollout timeline

WhatsApp says usernames will become operational in phases over the coming months, with availability depending on the user's account and country. The company has not committed to one global launch date, instead opting for a gradual release similar to past feature rollouts on the app.
