When Will Monsoon Reach Delhi? Check Expected Date As IMD Issues Yellow Alert, Predicts Rain & Thunderstorms
Delhi-NCR residents woke up to a much more pleasant morning on Wednesday after light rain and gusty winds overnight brought much-needed relief from the scorching summer heat. After days of intense temperatures and humid conditions, the change in weather has raised hopes that the southwest monsoon is finally set to arrive in the national capital.
Delhi Weather Today: IMD Predicts Rain, Thunderstorms Over Next Few Days
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for Delhi for Wednesday and Thursday, forecasting light rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds in several parts of the city. While the maximum temperature is likely to hover around 40 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, weather officials expect temperatures to gradually decline if rainfall activity picks up over the next few days.

According to the latest IMD forecast, Delhi is likely to witness intermittent spells of rain beginning Wednesday. Rainfall activity is also expected to increase across northwest India, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and eastern Uttar Pradesh between July 1 and July 6, as favourable conditions develop for the southwest monsoon to advance further inland.
The weather department believes improving wind patterns and moisture incursion will support more widespread rainfall across the region, bringing relief from the prolonged spell of hot weather.
When Will Monsoon Reach Delhi? Check Expected Arrival Date as IMD Predicts Rain to Begin This Week
The normal date for the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Delhi is June 27, but this year's progress has been delayed.
According to the IMD, the monsoon is expected to advance into Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and most remaining parts of north India within the next two to three days, provided weather conditions remain favourable.
Earlier, on June 28, the IMD had stated that conditions were becoming increasingly favourable for the monsoon to move further into northern India over the following five to six days.
Private weather forecasting agency Skymet Weather has projected that the southwest monsoon may reach Delhi around July 4, roughly a week later than its usual arrival window of June 27-28.
IMD July Rainfall Forecast: India Likely to Receive 94% of Normal Rainfall This Month
Even as monsoon clouds approach north India, the IMD has projected that July 2026 may receive below-normal rainfall across the country.
The weather department expects rainfall during July to be around 94% of the Long Period Average (LPA), indicating that the country could witness slightly weaker-than-normal rainfall during what is traditionally the wettest month of the southwest monsoon.
Historically, July contributes around 280.4 mm of rainfall, accounting for nearly 32% of India's total seasonal monsoon rainfall of 870 mm, based on the IMD's 1971-2020 Long Period Average.
India Records Fifth-Driest June in 125 Years
The subdued rainfall forecast follows an exceptionally dry June across the country.
According to IMD data, India received only 99.5 mm of rainfall during June, nearly 40% below the Long Period Average of 165.3 mm. As a result, June 2026 has become the fifth-driest June recorded in the last 125 years and the driest since 2014, when rainfall stood at 92.8 mm.
For perspective, the driest June on record remains 2009, when the country received just 87.6 mm of rainfall.
