When Will Monsoon Reach Mumbai? IMD Revises Weather Forecast, Rains Likely by June End; Check Expected Date

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has now indicated that Mumbai and adjoining regions of Maharashtra are likely to receive widespread monsoon rainfall by June end. This suggests a further delay in the onset of the southwest monsoon over the city, which typically arrives around June 10-11.

Monsoon in Mumbai Delayed: IMD Revises Expected Date; Check When Monsoon Will Reach This Year?

As per the latest forecast, northern Maharashtra-including Mumbai-and parts of central Maharashtra are expected to see more consistent monsoon showers by June 25. This marks another revision in the expected timeline, as earlier predictions had placed the onset around June 18-19, which was later shifted to June 22-23.

Mumbai Rains

Initially, the monsoon was expected to reach Mumbai around June 10-11, but its progress along the western coast has remained stalled since June 8.

Mumbai Rains Likely After June 25: IMD, Skymet Signal Weak Monsoon Movement Over West Coast

According to IMD updates, the western branch of the monsoon had been expected to resume its advance around June 15-16. However, the system continued to remain sluggish, with the weather office later indicating that it could stay stuck near Harnai in South Konkan until at least June 20. This prolonged stagnation has contributed to the delayed arrival over Maharashtra, including Mumbai.

Private weather agency Skymet has also taken a cautious view, suggesting that Mumbai may see monsoon arrival only after June 25. If this happens, it could turn out to be one of the more delayed onsets in recent years. The last notably late arrival was in 2023, when the monsoon reached Mumbai on June 25.

Late Monsoon Impact on India's Weather and Agriculture

However, meteorologists have clarified that a delayed onset does not necessarily mean a poor monsoon season overall. The southwest monsoon is assessed over the four-month period from June to September, and rainfall performance can improve later if active spells strengthen. That said, a weak or delayed June can still create short-term pressure on water supply, reservoirs, agriculture, and weather-dependent sectors.

Mumbai Weather Today: Excessive Heat, Humidity Spike

In the past 24 hours, Mumbai has received only light and scattered rainfall. These showers have not been widespread enough to bring down temperatures or humidity significantly, although cloud cover has helped ease daytime heat in some pockets of the city. So far, the city has recorded only around 13 mm of rainfall this June, which is below normal levels.

The IMD expects conditions over the Arabian Sea to improve around June 20. If that happens, monsoon winds may gather strength and support a faster advance along the Maharashtra coast, which could lead to increased rainfall activity thereafter. The next four to five days will therefore be important in assessing whether the current stalled phase is coming to an end.

Driest June Start Since 1958; Why is Pune Not Receiving Rain

Meanwhile, Mumbai continues to witness a weak start to the monsoon season, with no sustained heavy rainfall so far. Pune has seen an even drier beginning, with the Shivajinagar observatory recording no rainfall in the first 15 days of June-the first such instance since 1958. IMD records also show similar dry spells in 1915 and 1932, although those years eventually received varying levels of June rainfall later in the month.
